Change battery

Featured Replies

Hi All

Just ask i have to change the batteerry in my superb  2010 170dsg and was thinking that it may be possible to connect it to the trickle charger so no power is lost. Is this recommended? I did see a guy on you tube using a 9 v battery as a back so no power is lost? any thoughts would be appreciated.

I've used croc clips / jump leads before.  From new battery to car, remove old batter. install new battery, remove clips.

Bit faffy though as they're not the most stable and can pop off - this was on an older car with less brains..

Does the superb actually loose anything if you disconnectthe battery?

I dont know, if it loses anything clock maybe? i think the 9v thing sounds a good idea ut to keep it ticking?

On the assumption that the Superb has the same body ECU as the Octavia, you'd lose the clock, and current data from the trip computer. Important stuff like the stereo code, immobiliser code and central locking codes are stored in stable RAM and don't get dropped when the battery is disconnected.

Thanks Ken, can anyone verify if this is the case with ECU?

I've heard that disconnecting battery properly is important for premium class cars like Mercedes and similar. Never heard that it might affect Skoda. At least it's not a big deal for Octavia.

I've got one of these "computer saver" - ie plug-in 9v devices, never used it. Charging a battery while it is still connected to the car is okay if it is a charger like a CTEK or same quality.  Using a basic "dumb" charger to support the car electronics while you swop batteries is not generally a good idea, these "dumb" chargers have only a crude bridge rectifier in them with no smoothing as they rely on the battery in its partially charged state to act as a smoothing device. In fact I think it has been said that these "dumb" chargers are the best, for the battery charging, type of charger as they hit the battery with spikes of charging voltage, and so current, the good smart sequential chargers have that function built into them but in a properly controlled way to protect the connected car's electronics.

I had to have my battery changed today. Car two weeks out of warranty - not impressed. Local dealer didn't want to know, so went to Halfords - very helpful. 5yr warranty. Seems to have held all settings except clock, although a number of warning lights did stay on for a while - a bit worrying, but they went off quickly. Will be contacting Skoda UK for comment.

Not sure if this will apply to your 10 plate but regards diagnostics, the charging system might need to know a new battery has been fitted.........something to do with internal resistance of battery and whether or not it has smart charging?

Someone can likely clarify or shoot me down in flames?!

Car is a 62 plate, therefore the battery just over three years. I can't remember the last time I had to buy a battery including a car that I had for seven years. At least the car started this morning!! I will keep an eye on the charging.

Hugely unimpressed by your battery: My original lasted over 9 years, and the replacement 4 years and counting (touch wood).

I believe this is on cars with 'Stop Start' as it needs to know the capacity and type so it can ensure it does not take too much out the battery and it wont start etc!
