1.8tsi dsg should I stay away?

Featured Replies

Local to me a 2012 1.8tsi has just come up for sale. I was really excited as I have the 1.8tsi in my scout and love it, despite the potential issues. I used to have dsg in a vw before and loved that too.

However I realised today the 1.8 has dsg7. I thought it was dsg6.

Should I avoid it like the plague? The combo of the 1.8 and the dsg just asking for trouble?

Fuel consumption?

Sounds like you have experience of both the 1.8 TSi and DSG, both favourable.

Do your checks on the test drive (it also sounds like you know what to look out for) and consider a 12 month warranty to help iron out any early niggles not caught on the test drive.

Fuel consumption isn't my biggest concern. If I can get mid 30s (from my research that should be achievable) then I would be happy.

I've only experienced the 6 speed wet box, which I understand is a different beast and more reliable.

A 2k bill is a bit of a scared thought!

I too like DSG, but I favour low running costs and high durability / longevity ahead of an auto box.

So a good old fashioned manual box and basic clutch for me!

For me I drive in inside the m25 too much, manual is so much more hard work. Whilst I regularly get stuck in traffic I will always drive an auto...

I love my dsg.....but it's the 6sp version which seems to have a better reputation.

That said, a 2012 model with fsh should be okay I would have thought....

Good luck with the potential purchase.

I had a 2003 4 x4 with the 1.8 petrol. Nasty old thing that struggled to do 25 mpg and that was with a manual box , that combined with a small tank gave a range of 200 miles

I imagine the 2012 Superb is a slightly different beast to the 2003 one but you might be right with the 1.8 unit and Awd and dsg = heavy on fuel......

When I drove it like a vicar I could get it up to 28 mpg. No power below 3 k but went like a rocket when hammered , great fun in snow

Thanks guys. I test drive it and got about 30mpg. But it was only a short run, 10 mins tops. So I think mid 30s average may be achievable.

Just did a 70 mile run in my scout 1.8 and got 36mpg and that's a manual and 4wd although it was a mostly quiet motorway.

Really like the car by the way. Comfy, quiet and surprisingly nippy. Tried to do a deal but they couldn't give me a sensible trade in on my car.

if only.....

the DMF ruined that chance

Manual box, basic clutch and mechanical sympathy

Well, a testdrive should say everything. 1.8tsi its problematic itself, and with dsg7 its ubeatable bag of troubles. Relay on mileage can be seen, how quick issues will come on. 170tdi with dsg6 will be more reliable, just heard complaints about dsg algorithm- 40mph and already on 6th gear!!

What's problematic about the 1.8TSi?  I've just taken one to 100,000 miles and the only problem I had was right at the end where two of the coil packs were breaking down under extreme acceleration.

I've now got a new/used one with 30,000 miles on the clock.  It runs like a Swiss watch.  Mine's a manual, by the way.

Have I been lucky?  Should I be worried?

my brother in low has 2010 1.8tsi+DSG in Germany (90K miles on the clock), engine just blew off (dealer advised replacement for modest 5000 Eur sum), repair cost ca 2000 eur. My is from Warrington, 70K miles on the clock, and with 0,5L of oil just done 400 miles. Friend of my has same engine in 2007 year car, says runs on 1l oil per 1000 mile (Bickerton said its absolute normal).  I was thinking the same, after reading on internet loads of complaints, cant be all the engines so bad, f*&^k I wasn't right :-)

No need to be worried but sometimes it pays to be aware of potential issues in the hope you can identify and catch them early if they do occur.

This thread may be of some interest as the 1.8 TSI does have some well documented issues...

Thanks everyone. As it happens a 170 dsg 4x4 l&k came up reasonably locally to me so I've just put a deposit on that instead.

I really like the 1.8 but it was overpriced and I think the dsg7 would continually worry me.

Besides the l&k has more goodies!

According to all known forum...worst combination (Maybe 1.4 tsi plus dq200 dsg is even worse) 1.8 Oil consumption and dry clutch dsg...stay away..new dsg 500 backed to wet clutches -it means smth

^^^^

I take it there that you mean 1.4 TSI Twinchargers 180-185 PS due to the failure rate of these engines.

The DQ200 7Speed Twin Dry clutch has no greater failure rate with that engine than in any other application,

and the 1.4 TSI (Turbo only, & ACT/COD) engines in 105, 122, 140,150 ps suit the DQ200 DSG / S-Tronic pretty well.

There was a World Recall excluding the EU/UK, and then service campaigns, but that still does not mean the 7 Speed Twin Dry Clutch

box is made of chocolate.

Two reason-first dry clutch is disaster and I am almost 100%sure next edition of "weaker" dsg will be wet and 1.4 tsi is almost one time engine..not poosible and worth ($) to repair

Not so sure on that. Time will tell.

Just in 2015 the Plant in Vrchlabi was expended to increase production of the DQ200 from 1,000 to 1,500 units per day.

Lots of Investment from the Volkswagen Group into the plant.

Many 1.0, 1,2 and 1.4 TSI / TFSI VWG vehicles are fitted with the 7 Speed Twin Dry Clutch DSG / S-tronic.

A lot of the "judder" problems reported on the 7 speed box are due to clutch failure... the revised clutch pack I believe was just the same but with thicker plates to make them last longer!

Still though there must be a lot of 7 speed DSG boxes running around with no problems whatsoever.

I personally wouldn't want one... I feel the 6 speed is a bit of a risk itself and the 7 speed seems even more prone to problems.

Hope the 170 L&K treats you well. I'm sure you'll enjoy! Just don't forget to have the gearbox oil and filter replaced every 40k miles.

That would be the older produced ones, which i suppose we are speaking about here.

As for now and the future,

You would be hoping that as Volkswagen managed to become the biggest car manufacturer in the world in the first 6 months of 2015

that they had dealt with Fundamental Design, Manufacturing and Component Quality Control,

Fluids and Software issues.

Who knows though, maybe not.
