Who uses an iPod?

Featured Replies

Started this topic as I am interested to know if I'm the minority regarding how I use the media function of the car.

I connect an iPod via USB cable to stream the music.

Is this method how most listen to their music, or is it streaming over Bluetooth from your phone?

Be interested if anyone has had issues with the playback.

I use i-pod and bluetooth, no problem with either

Bluetooth as I don't have iPod connectivity on mine :(

No takers on the iPod + usb combo yet then?

Ipod classic connected via blue collar lead to Mitsumi socket (MDI)...

I use my ipod touch connected via usb most of the time. Havnt tried using an sd card yet.

Ipod classic through the Mitsumi connector - old skool I know, but my whole music collection in one place.  :D

All music on an SD card.

Out of sight, no charging necessary.

iPods are a bit old school now...lol

+1 on the SD card. 2x 32gb.  Plus I also use a San Disk Ultra Fit 64gb usb drive - tiny thing, smaller than my thumbnail.  Don't even use the cd player. 128gb of music that would fit into less than half a matchbox. How much music do you need all at the one time?

SD card and CD's here, though I had the MDI socket fitted but rarely use it.

iPod touches via red mitsumi cable here.

2x SD-card for me too.

This way I can have a family friendly collection & another with my own choice of music.

No charging, messing around connecting cables etc

Music is always available & its easy enough to flick out a card to add or change the music selection for the next day.

Thanks everyone so far for your setup. Interesting about using the SD card slot. Presumably you don't get album art, and you can't setup playlists etc from your iTunes?

Not heard of these MDI sockets. I'm guessing at one point a USB socket wasn't a standard feature?

My usb connection is still playing up when connecting my iPod to it. The dealer didn't seem that confident they would be able to do anything about it. Based on feedback from the forum and me trying my iPod/usb combo in another Skoda without issue, I'm not really happy about it as it is clearly a car fault. Being able to connect an iPod to the car was a main feature I wanted in a new car, and in mine it is dropping out constantly which is most irritating.

Anyone have any advice on how to launch a complaint to Skoda to get this fixed, and how likely they are to take any action??

iPhone via BT.

I use a 160gb iPod classic via the USB port(Columbus so no mitsumi). Works a treat but occasionally resets itself when I turn the car on.

Can't comment on the iPod but I hired a Fabia over Xmas that had Apple CarPlay and I was most impressed when linked to my iPhone 5 via USB once I got used to it.

Offline Spotify via bluetooth here

You get album art with the SD card. I hear you can do playlists, but its not easy.

Not sure how far you would get with Skoda. I expect they will just blame your iPod.

Why use iPod anyway when you have iPhone? iPod is soon going to be a relic as floppy or CD these days... lol and DVD!

Album art can be embedded into the MP3 file or added to the folder as a folder.jpg file.

For your problem with the cable, I would ask the dealer that you demonstrate your iPod and cable is working in another car they have.

This proves your iPod and cable is ok.

After that its down to them to investigate if its a wiring or firmware issue with the headunit.

160gb iPods allow for a lot more music than an iPhone unless you spend silly money.

But to answer the question from the OP, I have an SD Card full of music, plus some CDs and I use my iPhone connected to the Mitsumi port.

USB socket has always been standard on MK3's

USB and Aux in was standard fit on pre MY16 Octavias with Bolero and Amundsen headunits, it supported USB mass storage mode so worked with most USB music devices, memory sticks and HDDs formatted in the correct way....they however never supported Apple devices. You needed the "Mitsumi" connector option or MDI/Media In as its otherwise known....VAGs earlier means of providing media device connectivity into their vehicles.

Cars fitted with Columbus had USB regardless and were Apple compatible.

With the intro of the MIB2 headunits with MY16 came a move to fit Apple capable USB connectors also....good as you can use the USB lead your device came with to uplink and does away with the need for proprietary cabling that was required with MDI.

I installed an iPod Nano in my MIB2 equipped Golf really to see if it works but have left it there. I listen to DAB most of the time, have an SD loaded with a few Gb of music installed (which I havent changed for an age) and occasionally stream music over Bluetooth using YouTube. I will probably subscribe to Spotify at some point and let that be my primary source.

I've dabbled with a 64gb SD card but the artwork was hit and miss. Even if it's embedded into the track it still won't display correctly if the image is the wrong size. Track names didn't display in a consistent format as this depended on the audio file format. I also didn't manage to figure out how to create playlists. Even after all the messing around I convinced myself the quality wasn't as good as my ipod classic, especially at higher volume. Hence I've reverted to the ipod.

I'm currently toying with the idea of an iPhone but refuse point blank to spend the £500ish needed to match the storage capacity of my ipod combined with a useful screen size. My 80gb ipod classic cost £120 brand new and until recently has served me extremely well over the past 8 years. It's on its last legs now though and there doesn't seem to be a replacement available that ticks all the same boxes.

That what I use and have problems (although my Infotainment unit is the standard system).  :|
