1.2 AWY 6v, assemblying the bottom part of engine - what are the bolts tightening torques?

Featured Replies

Hello

Have any of you tried to assemble the bottom part of the 1.2 AWY 6v engine? If yes, then please give me the bolts tightening torques for connecting rods and main bearings. Does the engine work properly after such repair, and for how long? I heard that these are the "throw away" engines, but is it entirely true? Is there no way to fix them?

Yep it's true. There are no workshop instructions provided to strip down the short engine. It's an exchange short motor and that's it.

I would use engineers tables to determine the torque setting according to bolt diameter and thread pitch and loctite the rod bolts to be absolutely certain.

Don't think VAG supply any bolts or bearings as lower level parts either (that's not to say you wouldn't source something). However the three cylinder bottom end is quite a piece of kit, balancer assembly and pump are quite intricate. Plus from what I remember from the introduction course once the unit was assembled that was it, it couldn't be stripped and rebuilt without some form of remanufacture. However they did originally say that the cylinder head wasn't to be removed, until they realised they had cocked up the valve guides so policy may have changed.

Easier and cheaper just to get a short motor though I'd expect and then have the warranty on it, or get a salvage engine.

The problem is a low pressure on the third cylinder

I need to change the piston rings so I need to disassemble the bottom end of the engine to reach the crankshaft and connecting rods

Are you absolutely certain that it's the piston rings and not the exhaust valves and seats, it would be very unusual for the rings to fail on one cylinder but very common for the exhaust valves to burn out.

Have you carried out a leak down test?

Have you then removed the head and checked the seating of the valves?

As mentioned above the valve guide issue is very well known and Skoda used to provide repair kits with a new cylinder head to sort loss of compression.
