Based on the results (so far) of the Focus CT poll I've decided to see how this one goes...........

If there were only these 4 (or maybe 5) to choose from and you had the cash what would you go for?

Hi

If it were not for work, then the Octavia II vRS. I like the way it looks and goes and unlike most of the others on the list, it will be a less common sight on the roads.

If they do a vRS diesel, that would be just the job for work and play.

Sorry but an Octy is not a hatch.......

 Its not a saloon (such as the 3-Series, 9-3, A4, Jetta etc..), the rear window also forms part of the boot i.e when you open it, it goes up into the air along with the rest of the metal which allows access to the boot (just like on the Golf, Astra, Focus, Fabia etc....) therfore allowing you to fit things such as dogs and kids bikes in the car (but not as much as an estate) ........... always thought that defined a hatchback

Your forgetting one thing.. itll have the fastest top speed of the lot, and probably better fuel consumption on the motorway too..

ala octy vrs mk1 vs Leon cupra/FR

its all down to aerodynamics.. the golf/fabia/leon/focus hatchback shape is about as aerodynamic as a brick.. anyone who has tried a top speed run will agree about the "brick wall" that the cars hit..

I like the ST - and I never thought I'd hear myself say that.

But electric Recaro seats are simply

And for the price, I think its unbeatable.

Oh, and it'll outhandle the rest too.

Focus ST gets the best right ups, and the Astra has the best paper specs so would be a toss up between those two :D Electric recaro's do sound very tempting, and I'm not sure I could live without a heated windscreen now ;)

Top speed isn't really an issue for every day driving ;)

I agree with Beef here...though the Octi is officially a hatchback, in reality it is not. A hatchback does not have an a$$, and the Octavia has one. Yes, the rear window is attached to the boot, but it still has an a$$. It couldn't handle like a hatch either, given the overall length of the car. It looks more saloony than a hatchback.

I like the idea of a Diesel vRS, but I can't be bothered waiting to see if it ever arrives -- if and when it does it'll probably be more expensive than the petrol variant anyway.

Personally I don't do the mileage needed to be better off with a Diesel

isn't the octavia the same chassis as a golf, but with a different shape body fixed to it...?

not really sure how the shape of the body panels would effect how a car corners, can't see a focus saloon handling better/worse than a hatch version and i don't think bengie's estate focus went round corners any worse than my hatch

The ford escorts were all hatchbacks and they had a vaguely saloon shaped body rather than a truncated rear like the golf and fabia.

Nobody disputed them , so why the octavia?

It is a large hatchback

The new octavia is a stretched golf platform with a longer wheelbase.

The mk1 octavia had the same wheelbase with a huge overhang at the back

so a car with the rear window built into the rear access of the car and a small overhang isn`t a hatchback but the same without an overhang is a hatchback? And for years i though a 300 series volvo, mondeo, avensis, laguna, mazda6 etc were hatchbacks. better late than never to find out the truth. ;)

Taken from Skoda UK's website;

"Powered by a state-of-the art 2.0-litre TFSI turbo engine, the Octavia vRS breaks new ground on many fronts. With an output of 200bhp, it’s the most powerful production car ever made by Škoda. It’s also the quickest with a top speed of 149mph and a 0-62mph time of just 7.3 seconds. And with a price of £17,500 OTR for the hatch and £18,200 OTR for the estate, it delivers more bang per buck than any other car in the sector"

Money no object - Golf GTI. If the Focus ASBO becomes stellar value (say 15k new) then it might tempt me in a colour other than headsplitting orange.

The Octavia is a hatchback, but I'd dispute it being classed as a hot hatch. It's not available also as a 3 door and in reality it's a class bigger than the Golf it shares the platform with - more comparible with the Vectra/Mondeo segment.

vRS diesel would tick all the boxes for me. Please make it so Skoda UK :)

If not, and I had to have one of the cars listed, I'd be torn between the GTi and petrol vRS.
