Premium WLAN with integrated high-speed LTE internet

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I had the Premium WLAN with integrated high-speed LTE internet option fitted to my SEL EXEC, I have only just got around to purchasing an EE Data Sim on Saturday, I have tried to set up the Mobile Hot Spot but without success, I have read through the Columbus Manual and followed the instructions, the EE Sim is recognised, I have attached a picture of the Network Setting Screen.

Question, has anyone else opted for this and have you been able to set up ok, any help would be much appreciated.

Quick update,

I have managed to get the Premium WLAN with integrated high-speed LTE internet working, the first issue was to change some settings in the Columbus Network Settings Menu, with the EE Data SIM I had to delete the information in Usurer Name & Password, as below.

"User Name" this should be left blank.

"Password", this should also be left blank.

Ensure that you Enter and save any changes.

When you search for available Wi-Fi Networks on your external device, such as an iPad and you find the Wi-Fi network, in my case Skoda WLAN_0179_, you click on connect, a password request box will appear, you are asked for a password for the accessed network, the Pass word in my case was the "Network Key" in the Network Menu, ensure you enter this data exactly in the password box and enter.

All being well, your iPad or Laptop will connect to your Skoda Wi-Fi Network, I checked my Download & Upload Speeds tonight, 32Gig down and 20Gig Upload, not bad.

I hope this helps for any other poor non techies like me get set up, obviously the setting may differ for other Data SIM Providers.

What plan did you get? I've not set up mine because prices still seem too much for the amount I'll use it. I got it more for future proofing as I expect prices will fall and allowances increase. What happens if you drive over to Europe?

Hi,

I opted for the EE Network, 30 Day Contract, £10 per month,1 GIG of data, just so that I could experiment with it so if I was not happy with it the just cancel the contract.

What options do you get in the standard Columbus? Is there an option to put in a SIM card or do you need this Premium option?

ThePremium WLAN with integrated high-speed LTE internet is an optional extra, which if you have specified it, you will have a Standard Phone SIM slot, this is located between the two SD Card Slots in the Media Unit in the glove box, the SIM Card Size is a standard 25mm X 15mm.

I would assume that you would contact your service provider, as you do now for your normal mobile phone network, to enable it to work outside of the UK.

OK.

The Columbus description is "Columbus touchscreen satellite navigation system with integrated Wi-Fi HDD-based navigation with 8" colour TFT touchscreen, DVD drive and integrated Wi-Fi via tethering"

So presumably that just means tethered from your own mobile device? Can a current SE-L owner confirm?

Yes I believe that's correct.

I have an iPhone 6+, on O2, but i never tried to set up the Tethering via the Columbus Unit, I connected my iPad via Tethering directly via my iPhone, someone has just started a new thread, asking the question about the Columbus Tethering issue.

The advert for my car says I have 'Premium WLAN', but I've discovered that there's a lot that was on the advert that isn't on the car - how would I know if I have it or not?

If u read the earlier posts, u would c how to tell.

Look in the glove box.  If the head unit has a SIM card slot........

Thank you, I missed that when I read through.

I've just installed a Three 12GB 12 Month data only SIM in the SIM slot on my Columbus unit in an SE-L Exec. . Can be purchased on eBay for £27.99 from mymemory-uk.

It gives you a total of 12GB which has to be used within 12 months, but any unused allowance carries forward from month to month.

Not sure if it allows EU roaming, but it works fine in the UK and the WIFI Hotspot has proved a great hit with the kids.

I'm also using Android Auto from my phone, for Waze, Spotify, etc, but I didn't want to use my phone data allowance for the WIFI Hotspot, even though I believe this is supported if your phone supports rSAP.

If we eat the 12GB rapidly, then I will need to look at another option, but for now I'm happy with teh Three solution.

I used one of their 12GB/12M data sims in a tablet a couple of years ago  and it did exactly what it claimed to do.

Thought this might be helpful for anyone thinking about data SIM options.

For your information the 3 Sim does allow EU roaming under its "Feel at Home" plan. We always take one in a Huawei Mifi device when we go on a cruise.

Mine moves between cars stuck on the dashboard with velcro.

Amazon also do a 24 Gig valid for two years SIM for just over £40. Slightly better value.

That's good to know xlray. Thanks.

And the 24Gig/2 years deal is a good tip as well.

Looks like the Premium WLAN as advertised was yet another fictional item not actually included on the car :( I having suspect having a portable wifi router would be useful for getting Skoda Connect to work as well as keeping the kids entertained. Which mifi device do you use, xlray?
