Keep wipers from chipping paint...

Featured Replies

Hi, I just wanted to put this out here if anyone has found a good solution / modification to the windscreen wiper design problem.

The wipers can not be pulled all the way from the windscreen like most cars, when pulled it hits the bonnet and will likely chip the paint if done repeatedly.

I've been thinking about trying to mould a "stopper" from sguru or similar substance under the bonnet or making a rubber sleeve for the wiper arms to avoid this happening.

Anyone come up with a good fix?

If it's the same as the Octavia, put the key in the ignition turn on and then turn off the ignition now press the wiper stalk down (single wipe) and the wipers should park on the screen.

Hi! I had same concerns and today the dealer explained me a neat trick. I'm not sure, but it might be in the manual somewhere, but I guess we are all too lazy to read it through :) At least I am :)

Anyways, there is a simple system in place. Start the engine, then stop the engine, and then push the wind sreen wiper switch down once (the mode where you wipe the screen just once) and guess what - it puts the wiper in the special mid windshield position, which lets you easily pull away. It basically is intended to work like this: you come home, you turn off engine, you slide that wiper, pull those wipers away or just let them stay up to the middle and then go into your home. Come out in the morning and just clear the windshield easily.

I'm concerned about that person who doesn't know about this and for some reason needs to lift the wipers, be it your mother borrowing your car, a police officer giving you a ticket, a person cleaning your car, basically someone other than you...

Where there is likely to be metal (windscreen wiper) to metal (bonnet) contact and a risk of scratches obtain some clear "helicopter tape" and neatly stick some small patches in that area. Once the tape is installed it will be vitually invisible but should assist in preventing scratching.

The intended design is to park the wipers in the service position before leaving the car to freeze overnight.

The service position is exactly that............a service position e.g. replace the blades. If they are frozen to the screen in the normal position they can still be lifted sufficiently to free them without any bonnet contact.

Not really. Believe me, I know.

If you leave the wipers in the "service position" when leaving the car, knowing cold and snow will come, youll have a fair chance.

Otherwise its a pita to clean both wipers and underneath.

It may be a minor problem to you guys living in a warmer climate than this, but to me its still a problem and an example of poor design. Even Skodas are driven in colder climates, which shouldnt be a surprise to the fine engineers at VAG. :(

How about some deicer spray or some slightly warm water to free the wipers?

I'd still agree with the folks from cold areas, a crappy design, might be okay for folk that live in more temperate regions.

There are definately some people here getting my frustration, glad I'm not alone thinking this. I'll take a picture next time I come to my car with crusty ice filling the gap under the bonnet and all holes and gaps in the wipers, pouring warm water is not a good idea, in very cold conditions it will crack your windshield, deicer is not suitable for thick layers of ice and snow but sure works well for frosty windows :)

I said warm water not boiling. Like 10-15 degrees C. That wont crack glass.

Get yourself a garage or even a car cover.

Maybe buy a car with wipers you can de-ice.

Try that at -20º or lower....

Get yourself a garage or even a car cover.

Wont help much when out in the middle of nowhere and snow is beginning to fall, will it?

Maybe buy a car with wipers you can de-ice.

Maybe the only proper advice here. Too bad we didnt know of the problem when ordering the car

Why do you need to lift the wipers all the way off the screen to defrost them?

The clearance between the windscreen and leading edge of the bonnet is enough to lift the wiper blades a couple of inches off the glass without the arms making contact with the bonnet.

Unless the ice is 2 inches thick then I don't see the issue.

The has been a feature on almost all Skoda models for the last 10 years.

I defrost two Skoda's in the dark each morning, an Octavia and a Superb. You only need the thickness of one finger under the rubber blade to release it.

Is it really that much of an issue to simply leave the wipers up in the service position every night during the winter months, it really isn't difficult to knock the wiper stalk down one notch when exiting the car on a night?

?

Have you looked at what is on the latest Fabia?

What?

Have you looked at the wipers and bonnet on the 2015 All New Fabia,

then considered the environmental differences in Iceland, Sweden, Finland even CZ?

No and yes.

No and yes.

Exactly................

I do understand that you dont see the problem, probably because you havent expired the most exciting event as it is. It doesnt necessarely happen during the night - with that I could live if it happened then only - but at driving. Were not talking about a little frost but of snow being compressed under the wipers and/or partly melting and freezing into lumps of inch-thick ice which needs to be chopped off, preferably in the middle of nowhere, to keep forward sight. It is not pure fun and proceed this without having to find a service position or opening the bonnet also would be most appreciated

It is NOT an issue on my 2009 Fab , it wasnt on the 2003 Octy and every other VAG car previous owned since the mid-seventies, neither on the Mercedes with the under-bonnet wipers, which I sold last year. Apparently designing hidden wipers that can be lifted off the screen without any other measures can be done.

Even VAG cars are being tested at the Arvidsjaur test center up north. They should be aware of this issue but havent adressed it.

Ill post a picture next time it happens. If my blood pressure allows it.

I maybe should add that besides this issue Im quite satisfied with the car. But I am living in a country where winter may be present 3-5 months a year.

Well explained pfaff! You have our sympathy in the temperate UK ;-)

Wow, what a surprising post, i knew nothing of this as i currently have a Mk2 elegagance and am on this Mk3 side to get some info...... i feell this is a design fault, i like just lift my wipers and thats it..... i do lift them a reasonable amount when the weather is bad or more likely when i am washing it. I don't want to have to faf about to get the wipers in the middle of the screen every time i decide an impromtu wash is in order. Very odd indeed.
