Diesel knock when starting from cold - is this a problem or normal?

Featured Replies

Apologies if this has been asked a hundred times already but as per the title I am getting a knock from the engine for a couple of seconds at the most when I start it from cold before it sounds normal.

My engine has done 132k and has always had regular oil changes using the correct oil and drives spot on.

I am guessing that it has been doing it for a while but given that my DMF has been sounding like a cement mixer and I have only just had it replaced I am now noticing this noise - is this anything to be concerned with or not?

Thanks in advance for any responses.

Could it be a failed heater plug meaning a cylinder isn't running right on a cold start?

Is it a knock or more of a tap?

Cold just be a hydraulic lifter, will go quiet as soon as oil pressure gets up to it.

The car starts first turn of the key and starts very quickly - would it start so quick if there was a failed heater plug?  Asking simply because I don't know :-)

Defintely a knock that disppears within seconds so I am guesing that it is oil pressure related.

I currently have a glow plug out, have yet to swap them all over, and even in these current minus morning temperatures, my car starts fine and without any 'knocks'. The car is on 105k so a little less than your's but not much. I'm not ruling out a plug, but in my case it isn't a problem.

If glow plug etc it's likely to puff bit of more smoke than usually out of that back upon first start up.

If could be a glow plug, but if so I'd expect to get white smoke on cold startup. I'd think the hydraulic tappets are taking a little time to get up to pressure and the issue might go away when it gets warmer or after an oil change.

My 2014 2.0 yeti went back to the garage last winter and has recently been back again with diesel knock. When the engine is cold and under load this happens.

Last year they could replicate it but got no fault codes. They could not replicate it this time as the weather had warmed up.

Could be glow plug operation. Glow plugs come on for a pre start warm up when the light is on and then continue on a second cycle for up to 8 minutes when the light is off to limit diesel knock on a cold engine.

A simple resistance check would confirm though.
