best 2ltr diesel engine, ?

Featured Replies

Hi Guys, time to retire my superb, seriously considering coming back to the Octy, but what is the best 2 ltr engine the PD, or the CR, and what one will give or hopefully give the least problems

The 130PD is a nice if a little noisy engine, the mpg is about as good as it gets (as the CR have DPF’s etc)

The CR170 is quieter but will feel much slower due to the linear way the power is produced, if you re mapped it however then they drive MUCH better however there are more things to go wrong with them (as mentioned they have a DPF)

If going for the 2ltr PD I was of the impression that the non DPF BKD 140 was the better lump.

Not sure how correct, but that is what I had been advised.

The pd140 is fine just avoid the pd170 on the vrs as that comes with dpf

2.0CR is more refined and much smoother, power delivery is more linear.

PD and CR have both had their fair share of issues depending on varient.

I've owned several 1.9PD's and the 2.0PD and 2.0CR. The 1.9's felt unbreakable but if I was going for the 2.0 I'd definitely go for a CR.

The late 140 bhp PD unit wouldnt have a DPF would it??

Correct, BKD is without DPF regardless of year

No only pd170 and 4x4 pd engines come with dpf the rest of the pd engines are dpf free.

Personally coming from a petrol I was a bit sceptical about going diesel but the CR is lovely engine, for a diesel. Cr is quiet and feels powerful through he rev range, a more petrol like delivery. The PD is just too noisy for me.

How much do you intend to spend on a car,and weather you want  vrs or non vrs  this may give an indication as to which engine you may get both pd and cr have there down falls i have a pd 170 vrs with a gutted dpf so no dpf problems wich makes it a great car but the only down fall for me is the engine is loud compared to my old tfsi vrs ,

1.9 pd         =no dpf

1.9 pd 4x4  =no dpf

2.0 pd         =no dpf

2.0 pd4x4    =dpf

2.0pd scout  =dpf

2.0 pdvrs     =dpf

2.0 cr          =dpf

2.0 crvrs     =dpf

hope this helps

How many miles a year do you do? Would a petrol be better suited?

Both my cars have the bkd engine and are 2 liter diesels. The hatch has the warning light for the dpf but the estate hasent! :/

Watch out for some BKD engines, they can suffer with porous or cracked cylinder heads. Wiring looms for the unit injectors (that run INSIDE the head) can become brittle and break.

I would opt for a CR140 if the budget allows it.

Stay away from any PD engines with a DPF as they aren't a good match.

DPFs are a fact of life these days, you'd be better served worrying about the usual things life throws at you, rather than something which will most likely do its job with no problems, as it does in millions of cars around the world.

First time ever to own a Diesel lump and it's the 2.0 CR 170. What can I say from experience after one year? It's pretty good.

Feels buttery smooth and although power delivery feels quite.....well........conservative, it's a nice feeling and especially running a Shark stage 1. Just wish it was more grunt like the PD but not as loud obviously.

It doesn't exactly set my heart on fire but I'm very happy with my choice.

Just my 2 cents.

Considering you are wanting this for taxi use, I personally wouldn't go for a 2.0. Knowing you are a big fan of the solid flywheel conversion, as previous cars have yours have proved this for thousands of miles, and also knowing the horrendous problems you have over the last couple of years with the BXE 1.9 in the Superb, I would seriously consider a 1.6CR TDI. It is a very capable engine, especially remapped to the 140 that a 2.0 naturally produces, and knowing the extent of the area you work, you won't have any issues with the DPF.

The 1.6CR is SMF convertible, and is far cheaper on road tax as well.  Don't discount it just because it "sounds" like a smaller, less capable engine.

What's wrong with the 1.9 BXE? I've just put a deposit down on an Octavia DSG and considering to use it for taxi purposes.Got me worried.

Ah I see. I have read about the conrod issue, but I am opting in for the 58 plate, with full Skoda History and on 87k miles, so I am hoping it is a good one, being a late version.

Also, the car has got Xenons, but not auto lights. Is this an easy option to upgrade to? What about the convenience lighting option? It has a maxidot display.
