Adaptive Cruise - Enabled via VCDS?

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Just another quick question from me, if I have the front assistant on my MY16 Octavia vRS, can the adaptive cruise control be enabled via VCDS? Or are there more systems etc needed for this?

I'd quite like the adaptive cruise but there's no way I'm paying the £765 Skoda want to rip my off by for it, but the £315 for the front assistant seems much more acceptable if I can get the adaptive cruise enabled afterwards by a kind Briskodian!

Let me know so I can get onto the dealer and get my order changed :) Thanks guys!

I think there is more to it.

Control unit, additional stalk (ACC has a separate control stalk on the Octavia), new column shroud (to accomodate the additional stalk), associated wiring and coding I would guess...like most things its probably not impossible with the know-how and access to the right systems but almost certainly going to cost mega bucks.

Ah ok, I feared that might be the case! Not to worry, I can't say it's a necessity, just something that would've been a nice extra. I'll stick with the standard cruise control then, just thought I'd ask before I send my long email to the dealer asking for a few more extras :) I'm sure they'll love me for all the extra effort I'm putting them through, whoops lol

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly though, much appreciated!

V welcome Ash, as you suggest whilst it is excellent (I have ACC on a Mk7 Golf GTD, with standard cruise on a Mk3 Octavia Elegance), its not worth the several hundred £ upgrade cost....very much a case of not missing what you havent had TBH.

I have front assist and no ACC.

I would say if I had known where the buttons for the standard cruise were on the indicator stalk I may thought harder about speccing the ACC.

Controlling standard cruise is a bit fiddly.

I would spec ACC without thinking. I have it now, and will not buy another car without it. Driving for hours with touching a pedal is comfy. Combine this with high beam assist and you need to do is to steer.

I purchased my VRS with FA and standard cruise when it was a £150 option. When I originally specced the car the brochure gave the impression that FA was front parking sensors.

To cut a long story short, I am happy with my spec; however, if I had a DSG box then I would definitely spec ACC.

I have DSG Golf with ACC, it is just awesome, so handy and does exactly what it says right down to a virtual standstill and all the way back upto 70mph without touching anything and at a completely safe distance from the vehicle in front.

Nothing short of brilliant!

ACC + DSG is brilliant if you do a lot of motorway miles.

That's the thing, I know it's a fantastic bit of kit, I just can't warrant the additional cost for the small amount of motorway miles I actually do. Maybe on the next Octavia :)

If you aren't a motorway mile muncher don't splash out - I find it awkward around town. If the O3 has the EPB it might be a different story though.

Yeah that's exactly what I was thinking. I only go on the motorway maybe twice a month atm, which is why I think it's more of a luxury than a necessity. Doesn't mean I don't want it though! lol

But the beauty of cruise control is when you get average speed cameras and you just set it and relax, no chance of the "yellow eagles" giving you a speeding ticket, I love it because of that, even though I've only got the bog standard one currently and I only do 10 or so trips on a motorway a year.

I'd like the adaptive one for the new one to make motorway driving even easier.

The adaptive one is usefull on all roads. As long as the traffic is moving, it gets the job done flawlessly.

I find it very usefull in rushtraffic, as long as it is combined with dsg.

Sounds like the cruise controls on my Mk1 VRS.

I have ordered standard cruise for my O3 so hope being used to the Mk1 controls I should be alright.

Options where do you stop! (Well, when you have hit your budget!).

Problem with this is, people stick their cruise control to the signed speed limit then refuse to move into the near side lane, whereas I tend to give it a few extra mph in the average speed areas... When I'm not impeded.

ACC can do some peculiar things at times though....I was following someone in a 30 limit then they turned off into a car park...the radar tracks some element of sideways movement too....but the car braked unnecessarily hard as if the car was still slowing down in front of me where it had already crossed the pavement and was in the car park entrance...I had to take charge and would have been one of those " what the f are they doing" moments had someone been close behind.

Like all this tech though...useful as it is it cant be entirely relied upon.
