Honest opinion - fabia VRS or fiesta ST

Featured Replies

Hi all first post here. I'm 29 and drove a 1.3 corsa cdti 2005. Fancy a change for something quicker.

I do around 6000 miles per year. Do you guys recommend the fabia VRS or a fiesta ST. I prefer petrol but not so sure about MPG

Fiesta ST, no contest.

I hired a diesel fiesta in turkey. Very impressed with the handling. I can imagine the ST is awesome.

only reason not too is MPG but 6000 miles doesn't seem loads

Fiesta ST , no question.

They're already being heralded as an amazing handling car, stock and out of the box. MPG should not be a concern for you if you're doing under 10k a year.

The Fiesta is designed to go around a corner, the vRS... Less so...

Fiesta ST,

but are you going for the likes of a 2005, and how much are you spending?

I'm getting a Fiesta ST150 and selling my VRS SE at the end of my insurance year.

I fancy the sound of petrol, and heated windows/better A/C etc inside.

Other than what I've said above, there's no other perks of the ST (if you are on about ST150) unless you like the look of it.

Speed wise, my Fabia (175 revo) is up to par with my mates ST150, 182 and 2.0 diesel ST, there's not much between them.

If you don't care about heated windows and climate control (which ford are best for) then I'd go for a VRS to be fair mate.

Although people on here say they 'give it the beans' and get 45+MPG, I don't know what beans they're giving but it's not many.

I drive around somewhat normally and actually give it some a lot of the time and currently in winter it's like 32-35MPG

I'd imagine if you actually drive the ST it's realistically maybe 23-28MPG and 6,000 a year isn't too much really.

If you're going to try and hit 35MPG or 45MPG respectively in the VRS you may as well get a 1.4TDI because you aren't going to use more than that power.

As above,which fiesta ST?

I thought you were getting a 120D BMW,or changed your mind since this morning? :D

Yeah, lol.

My first choice was Clio 197 but insurance is silly.

BMW would cost £9000 including 1 year insurance and on top of spending a lot of money, that would be my car for years and years.

I figured I'm 21 and only owned diesels, I want to try a N/A (hence the 197) and don't want a car yet that I'm going to have to make a big commitment to.

As you can probably tell I'm indecisive and when it comes to cars, don't like commitment.

I literally am getting rid of my VRS SE because this winter the windows have p**sed me off, always misty and need wiping on the inside.

All in with a years insurance I can get a FSH 50k miles ST150 for £5000 or so, and get rid of it a year after if I wanted to try other things.

Power is simlar, sound of N/A engines is a beautiful thing and it has heated windows and climate control (go ford)

Any car can get condensation when they are wet inside.

You seal the leaks, dry the car out, polish the glass, and if you do not want to spend anything buying Anti Mould / Moisture Absorbers Packs

you put dry salt in a Marg Tub with some holes punched in the lid, one in the boot, one in the car.

Total cost ziltch.

How bad can a bit of condensation be!? Have you sealed the rear doors or did you not bothered in the end?

Your honesty is admirable. I would love a clio sport. However reliability as well as fuel and running costs mean it would be a weekend car. Something that I do not yet have the luxury of even considering! So I have settled for mild performance with the view to keep my Fabia till it is on it's knees.

A tip for you regarding the irritation at condensation, poor a/c and lack of heated windows - don't EVER buy a defender [emoji38]

I want to spend around £3-4000. I was looking at 2008 Fiesta ST. New model definitely out of my range lol

Open to other suggestions as. I Have 6 years no claims so insurance isn't really an issue. Daily round trip is 22 miles with a mix of 50 mph busy motorway and quiet B Road commute in morning

My son has just collected his new ST3.

We went out last Sunday for a 100 mile run. Me in the Fabia vRS, and him in his nice new shiny blue beast.

Wasn't a blasting run granted, but steady.

I achieved 61mpg (shown), he showed 48mpg, in fact his reqched an average of 52 shown at one point apparently.

He does a 10 mile mixed  commute into Chester everyday, and is achieving a quite respectable 38 mpg.

Nice place to be and a lovely looking and kitted out car,....which worries me a bit in terms of 'thug and thief desirability tbh, but tracker being fitted tomorrow..... but you have to get used to the teeth filling loosening ride...not THAT bad actually

Me? I 'll stick to my lovely little black terrier. Nippy totally reliable so far in nearly 9 years, and economical.

Love it, but that's just my choice.

I did seal the door carrier on the side where my car had some water under the seat and I've dried it out, but the window is still ****! In the summer when I don't have to deal with it I'll probably like it again but I have definitely lost love for my VRS and it's a shame because it's an SE and everyone compliments it but being a cheap knock off of a VW they've really slacked on the inside of this car.

Can't complain because it's a whole lot of engine for the money, I just want more comfort.

Are you inpatient and the 4-5 months of cold and wet, do you mind waiting 10 mins for Windows to clear?

If you're driving 22 miles to work everyday I'd go for a VRS, as I said mines mapped 175bhp with a quality revo map, not just a **** one and it is fun, handles well and rainsport RS3 tyres are amazing lol, as I said I do drive like a **** and still get 65-70 miles to £10

Sorry should have said I meant either mark 1 fabia VRS or a fiesta ST 2008 ST1?

A wee point, they were not cheap and VW did not have a better or more expensive version.

You really can dry out your car and get rid of the damp and the condensation.

I just assumed because skoda was took over by VW, both my Fabias have got Audi and VW stamps on various parts and that the Fabia is basically a polo engine that they're good engines made with cheaper parts/designs etc so they could sell them cheap if you know what I mean?

Either way they're lacking on the inside, completely pants for a standard VRS. With my SE the seats are beautiful but the dash and A/C etc is still dog ****

Sorry my bad, i forgot about the Polo GT 1.9TDI, and i think VW sold under 600 of those in the UK.

One of those polo pd130's was for sale in the for sale section recently. More limited than the SE by a long way.

I'm with Adam that the condensation on the inside of the window can get tiring - especially when you come out of work and the inside is frozen harder than the outside.. lol.

I do have to say however - that this is a well known issue, and very fixable. Maybe I'm lucky that my work place literally throws out hundreds of dessicants a day.. I haven't sealed my rear door carriers yet, but underneath both foot-wells are a couple bags filled with dessys and I cleaned the windscreen with rain-x anti-fog stuff and I've been clear the past fortnight (temporary fix).

A lady at work has got the new ST.. I've had a small trip init. Nice refined motor and went round corners like a dream.. apart from that I can't comment on the older models. Apparently the new ST has some fantastic finance offers on it as well?

If your after a bit of fun, get yourself a Leon Cupra R.. :-)

Supra r a bit too hot really, can't imagine getting acceptable mpg, same reason I haven't gone for a type r.

Was looking for a warm/hot with better mpg than Cupra r or type r

Now lets assume you didn't do your used buying homework, to buy a really good car that mutes this point as the past owner has already fixed this and countless other well known issues

In my case. I bought my suspension for circa £120 ish for the HR some time ago, transformed the handling.

How is that really a serious issue when purchasing when its so easily fixed ?

At least the Skoda has a bit of character, I'd feel to lose a Ford in a sea of other bland identity cars (even with the sportiness over it).

I'm sure they are cracking cars despite - but when they outnumber the Fabia mk1 on the roads by 4 to 1, I'd keep the individuality - and economy myself.

If I was going to go performance petrol, I'd do what I've already got - mk3 oct 220 vrs tfsi - ****es over Fiesta ST - Best of both worlds ;) Not even that expensive for a mkII/ even a III if you bide your time and strike at a good opportunity like I did but granted its a different league in terms of size etc

My Fabia handles like its on a rail way, and I floor it.

Octavia is massive lol. Really nice car though.

Was looking for something a bit more frugal, think the Octavia only gets 25mpg

No way. Octy petrol 30mpg or a touch lower but thats really pushing it ( its fast, so erm, thats, erm, moving bloody fast to get that low MPG! Like going like nothing else on the road basically! So not something you'd be doing too often )

35+ towards 40 when settling in to more reasonable cruising speed. I don't get so much chance for mway myself so tend to get 35 just driving down the road to work urban so I dunno where 25 comes from ! Sounds well low.

Its a bit car though. But I'm no spring chicken myself now lol. Still love the Fabia mk1 diesel and this car though, so given I've the driving of a 2014 car and a 2006 fabia its with some great complement when I say I enjoy driving both equally.
