"Daddy " Phantom....

Featured Replies

I wasn't planning the full tt conversion, I only bought the arms cos they were poly bushed then saw how the hubs change the wishbone angle which I need to sort as I run it low and when ya find a pair for 28 quid delivered cos the seller thought the bearings were shot I had to have them, of course im fitting new bearings. Then my sub frame captive nuts have sheered so I couldnt fit my wishbones (after 2 hours stripping the hubs off and everything, was not impressed) so got a lcr sub frame nice and cheap. I werent gonna do the rack but now im doing most of the conversion I may as well do that too, just been offered one for 60 quid delivered. Cant wait to get it all on, just scared of removing the sub frame bolts as if that goes wrong its game over for my car.

U guys set the date for your ring trip this year yet?

Will do... I chatted to someone of facebook who has them and he rated them... bought them from DPM (site sponsors on here) and negotiated some money off ;)  I was umming and arring about these and the koni kit, but when he said these were made by KW, I bought these instead, knowing how well KW are regarded... not bad at £300 all in... they look real good quality ... I'm putting standard top mounts and bearings in, its getting serviced too...

All being done next week, I will update when I have a bit of driving under my belt, going down to the parents the weekend after so will get a few hundred miles on :)

Driving the eunos at the moment because its sunny! lol..

that is a bargain if he would do the price for mine id have some next week

I tried to get them for less, but he wouldn't have it! lol..... mention briskoda, they try to match "best prices" , so generally do a good deal... I took them out and checked they had the mounting points for the drop links too! lol..

Damien at DPM is a good lad - recommended place for bits. And as said... competitively priced

ok, tame mech brought it back, I need front brake hoses, ABS wire was rubbing on one, buying some braided ones from HEL Performance £39 , bargin.... worth his weight in Gold spotting stuff like that my tame mech! anyway ... front... he says it will "settle" and get lower...

IMG_0484.jpg

rear seems lower.... I put standard top mounts in the front, maybe should have gone for the 10mm lower polybushed mounts...

IMG_0489.jpg

not much gap there to say they are only supposed to lower 20mm!

IMG_0490.jpg

rear suspension in situ... couldn't get a pic of the front.... shineys....

IMG_0486.jpg

couldn't get my little plastic top covers on, bigger bolts ect on these struts apparently!

IMG_0494.jpg

my old suspension was well past it... They needed to supply a new top mount for one of the rears, it had broken, and new bump stops too.... If anyone wants my old suspension, make me an offer, or its gonna get binned!

IMG_0492.jpg

don't know what it drives like yet, gonna take it to work tomorow.... my tame mech also recomended letting it settle over 2-3 weeks, then getting a 4 wheel alignment done... may be worth taking that advice! I will report back on how this kit is!

Going to work the pretty way tomorrow then? :D

Big shout out to site sponsor Chris knott again (my insurers) I told them my plans when I renewed in Feb (I was going to put a performance suspension kit on, lowered by 20mm, and a RARB this year) they said it wouldn't increase my premium, just call them when I did it....

Just called them, no increase, no cost for the change. Top work.

my tame mech who delivered the car back said it was pretty hard, but thats going to be a joy after the boat like handling of the old and knackered standard stuff! lol...

I will report back tomorow, and do a proper review later after I have done some miles, and its all settled down :)

ok.... Just driven it to work and back so far ...... normal road speeds, a combination of all types of road....

Someone has given me a new car. I'm not joking, the improvement is THAT good....

Firstly the steering rack bush (polybush) I know after replacing all the other bushes, that surely the crappy vibration i get through the wheel every time my suspension hit a bump, HAD to be that bush... car steering felt old and worn out.... all that vibration has gone, feels like a new car, like someone has replaced the steering rack and put a new one in! no vibrate feedback from the wheel anymore... its actually CONNECTED to the steering and the front wheels... the "feel" of it is a massive improvement!

right, suspension ... obviously it looks much better (see pics above) , but again... feels like a new car.... all that horrible "wallowing" I used to get is gone!!! its actually properly damped... the increase in body control at speed is absolutely astonishing! The car no longer feels like a boat, it actually feels like a sports car! the response is sharp, the car no longer pitches under braking and acceleration, is MUCH flatter round corners, feels agile, almost as if someone had taken half the weight off the car! :o It has always weighed the same as my old fabia vRS (II) , but "felt" like it was twice as heavy.... that feeling has gone! The handling is vastly improved...

ride : Well this has suprised me..... I went for this set up over the coilovers, as I didn't want super lows, and wanted to retain comfort.... well believe it or not, the ride is actually Better  in all circumstances bar one... A roads, town, fast undulating country roads (this is where the biggest improvement has come! a fast winding country road!) it MUST be due to the vastly improved body control....

the exception? the little tiny back roads around our villages, which are in poor condition, where speeds are below 20mph.... it "jiggles" like the abarth, its not soft enough to cope with these circumstances and still provide comfort... but hell, the Abarth jiggles on these slow rough roads, I'm sure I can live with the Octy doing it , considering the massive improvements on offer!

I will report back again, when I have taken it a long way or pushed it hard, as we haven't had those conditions yet :)

I don't know if my old suspension was VERY knackered, or, my expectations were low, as its not a high end kit, but I am very pleasently suprised :)

damn, I have an issue with the new suspension.... tyre now catches the arch under heavy load (weight in the car, car loaded up with people...) I don't want the ball ache of trying to find new wheels with less offset :(  *sigh
