DBW or not that is the question?

Featured Replies

how do i know if my 2001 Octy 4x4, is dbw or not?

Does it have a throttle cable? If yes, then no. If no, then yes.

it'll be DBW.

Wasn't there a simple test with the brake and accelerator? Something along the lines of handbrake on, car in neutral, press accelerator to bring revs up then press the brake pedal at the same time and if the revs drop then you're on drive-by-wire.

Of course, I might be mistaken. Won't be the first time :D

Seconded - I'm alsmost positive that a 2001 4x4 is DWB.

(But the test is as follows: Keep one foot gently on the accelerator. Now (with right foot still on accelerator), use left foot to gently touch brake. If car stops accelerating (as if you'd come off the gas) then it's DBW. If the car keeps accelerating then you've got a throttle cable).

Not sure on this but....weren't all throttle cable 1.8t the phase1 Octavia for which I don't think there was a 4x4 model.

1.8T came as SLX models for phase 1 and seeing as you have a 2001 4x4 Octavia it should be an phase2 model and therefore drive by wire.

Jabba's site lists the production date for the 1.8T VVT (DBW) as 01/01/2001 to 31/12/2005. PM me your car's chassis number and I will see if I can check it. In the meantime I agree that yours is almost certainly DBW.

Would you mind doing the same for me? As I have a 51 4x4, and I assumed it was DBW, but i tried the test described above and it didnt work... unless i got it completely wrong!

There's an easier test:

1. Open the bonnet.

2. Look at the throttle body to see if there's a throttle cable connected to it.

The test described above should aslo work. Application of the brake pedal should reduce the throttle to idle.

If you see that in your car it is DBC.

Yep thats correct, but it doesn't work when stationary (at least not on a Superb anyway)

that testdoesn't work on mine either, but i have only tried it when stationary too
