My company Octavia SE Business has suffered badly from stone chips, within the first week of picking it up, it had 3 nasty chips, I posted this as a topic back last year in the Octavia section, many others have had the same issues, but as we all know, modern car paints are water based and quite soft, the environment has to come first !!!!.

I have been on various car forums, including Mercedes, you will find similar treads, everyone is suffering this issue, motorways have been the worst experience for me, the amount of debris is criminal,as we all know, the Highways Agency very rarely, if ever clean the hard shoulders or central reservation, cost cutting, thats why carriage ways are falling apart.

Yep I have three big chips on mine. Only 3k in.

I find VAG metallic/pearl paint is quite soft. Solid paint seems better.

I have a two year old Octavia in Candy White and it had a handful of chips on the bonnet and bumper but thats about it...no worse than I would expect for the 30k miles its covered.

My 4 month old Carbon Grey Golf GTD with just 7k on the clock is becoming reasonably peppered....it got a series of three chips above one of the rear arches within a couple of weeks of taking delivery and have noticed a couple on the front bumper already.

New water based paints can take up to 90-days to fully harden. It's very annoying!

Yep the paint is soft.

But also keep a distance behind other vehicles especially lorries, that helps a lot.

AIUI it’s only the base coat (colour) that is water based, the lacquer is not water based.

`AIUI`?

Ah...thanks.

I know my BMW has a ceramic clear coat and even after 6 years it is chip free.

What colours are chipping?

My 2003 Superb I dark green metallic chipped really badly whereas my 2001 Octavia (still water based paint) metalic silver has fared much better. So far my 2014 Superb II  metallic silver chip free at 25k miles.

It might be perception but I'm sure some colours fare better than others
