'Do you have access to any other car?'

Hi guys,

My insurance is due in a month. Aside from now having a years' no claims to my name, which obviously helps, the only other difference in terms of my situation/details from last year is that I'm currently a named driver on my girlfriend's car.

I've been looking on comparison sites, and they ask the question 'Do you use any other vehicles?' or something of that ilk. Comparethemarket explains this question with 'Some companies will give you a discount if you drive another car.' However, when comparing between the quotes when I say 'yes' rather than 'no' to this question, the premium appears to go up slightly - by around £50 - 100.

Can/should having use of another car increase my premium? I'm debating whether to stay on my gf's insurance. It costs her/us more to have me on but we felt it was better value than occasionally using temp cover (I only have to drive it 6 times before October to make it more viable than multiple temp covers) BUT if you take into account the combined increase for both of us, I'm not sure it's worth it.

Also, are there any companiees who will take into account the location of your workplace (ie, where the car is parked during the day) as well as your home when calculating your premium? I fit into the category of 'Office/Factory Car Park' but its in an area where i could leave my doors unlocked, windows open and phone on the seat all day and still not have anything nicked. Seems a bit weird that they're particularly worried about where the car's parked at night but not where it's parked during the day.

Cheers

Insurance: where today 2+2=4, tomorrow 2+2=5 and next week 2+2=banana.

Consider: you add someone else to your insurance.....9/10 the premium goes down. Eh? The car has the potential to be used even more, thus being at greater risk of being involved in an accident.

But, add another person, and the premium goes back up.

Maybe there's a Goldilocks zone for how much a car should be used.....not to little and not too much.

Same with the job title thing, same job, different title, different premium....even if the car isn't being used as part of the job, or even to commute.

I daresay that there are "rules and guidelines", but they are not meant for mere mortals like us to understand.

Hi,

Please feel free to give us a try for insurance if you like. If you wanted to PM me some contact details I'd be happy to arrange for one of my quotes team to give you a call back.

Regards,

Dan.

Its robot spammed to any topic with the word 'insurance' in it. Just put them on ignore if it annoys you.

The other broker who frequents here actually tries to contribute from time to time.

Hi,

I can assure you I'm not a robot. In most cases it's just easier to talk to a client over the phone about ways in which we can help them with their insurance as it so much more complicated nowadays as there are so many more factors to take into consideration to enable us to get a proper quotation.

Obviously no one is under any obligation to try us for insurance however we are happy to help if they want to.

I apologise if anyone has taken offence at my posts. By no means was this intended.

Regards,

Dan.

While I understand everyone's circumstances can be different, there have been a lot of questions on this complex subject that could have at least had a partial answer from someone in the industry. Such as 'for most people, it is because of x and y'. Ignoring the question and just posting a request to call is both simply rude and does nothing but reinforce the image that insurance quotes are just made up on the spot.

Hi,

Ok I fully appreciate your comments.

Regarding the initial questions on our insurance schemes having access to a 2nd vehicle can sometimes make a difference, normally a small discount. I'm not aware of policies that would increase due to this.

With regard to where the vehicle is kept during the day again most schemes are more concerned about overnight parking however on more specialist high risk / value cars some insurers will require day time parking information.

Regards,

Dan.,
