*urgent* Changing Head Unit In Tavias

Featured Replies

Couple of questions :-

1. How?

2. Does the standard unit have the ISO standard wiring harness or do you need an adaptor to fit a third party head unit?

I want to do the job this weekend so answers on a postcard quickly please :D

Steve

Steve,

First things first.

Make it easier for yourself & remove the glovebox via the 5 Torx screws (an allen key will do at a pinch) not forgetting to disconnect the wire from the glovebox courtsey light. This will give you a lot more room to work & make sure that none of the wiring is trapped.

The system is an ISO connector, however you will need a VW harness adapter as the ariel has a power feed down the centre core & there is a Diagnostics wire for the stereo to the Engine Management control which must be disabled (The "K" Wire). Fitting a harness adapter solves these issues.

They are available from Bluespot Audio or Larger branches of Halfords for between

So Do You !!!

Steve,

It's a doddle if you're just changing the H/U and plan to make the autochanger 'defunct'. For this you don't have to remove the glovebox.

Just take out the old one and disconnect all the plugs. Get the new one and connect the Blaupunkt adapter to it. Then just connect the adapter to the existing wiring. Job done.

Something to remember though. The doofus who originally fitted mine in while the car was being serviced kept connecting the now unusable autochanger. Doing this will send your electrics haywire and possibly damage the new H/U due to the autochanger and new H/U not being able to 'talk' to each other and getting thoroughly confused. Something to do with 'canbus'?

Thanks for everyone's help. I bought the following connection kits from Halfords :-

PC5-52 Amplified Antenna ISO adaptor

PC2-69-4 CAr Audio Connector

Hope these are correct. I'll fit my Head unit tomorrow and find out!

Steve

Aready posted this once but it got 'lost'

I didn't want to start a whole new thread because the subject has been covered before but this afternoon I tried the bass trick ie cutting away the foam from around the speakers in the front doors, and it really works. The bass response is much better. I also disconnected all the factory fit tweeters because the Infinitys (front) and Sonys (rear) I replaced the original woofers with are all two way and lets just say I had treble in spades  All in all a very successful Saturday afternoon, I think I may be finally happy with my ICE!

If anyone wants anymore details let me know.

And they say it can't be done :D

Happy New toy Steve, and welcome to the now infamous slippery slope ;)

I tried your removal method but my cable ties were too thick. I ended up snapping a hacksaw blade in two and using that

The oddment tray underneath looked a bit warped afterwards (hung low in the middle). This was disguised with some velcro, the texture of which matched the tray liner so it looks quite good :D

As regards slippery slope, my last car was a modified Impreza WRX so I already have the bug!

Next on the list is a remap (Jabba or Revo), brakes (Impreziv or Godspeed) and suspension (KW3's depending on how I rate TaviaRS's at donno).

Regards

Steve

Hi Steve,

Can't really tell from the photo which model you have but I have the Panasonic CQ-DFX783N which I think sounds a billion times better than the original OEM stuff, glad you are happy with yours and welcome to the slippery slope of modifying!

Cheers

Hugh
