S***p value of my car?

Featured Replies

I can barely bring myself to ask, but I have to be realistic.

I may be replacing my Fab this summer and if I'm being entirely honest with myself (though I hate to admit it because I'm quite attached to it), there won't be many people who'll want a 200,000 mile SDI with paint chips and a high clutch (even if I have sorted most of its issues since I bought it a year ago). If I can't sell it or palm it off onto someone, what is the scrap man likely to offer me for it?

It's essentially a sweet runner - starts first time, every time. The paintwork has suffered in places but there's no bubbling on the wheel arches - just a few small chips in the usual places (bonnet, wings etc). There are some dents and scrapes around and the rear bumper's got a small gash in it. Mechanically, aside from the clutch, it's pretty solid.

The price of scrap metal has fallen through the floor. I've been looking at scrapping the A6 I have for sale on here, 6 months ago I was offered £160 scrap and last week it will cost ME £30 to have the same company take it away (in other words its now worth nothing).

If you can get 12 months mot, someone will buy it.

We sold a polo in similar circumstances for £500, though it had plenty of life left in it.

As said scrap is basically nothing. My shell got taken for free, which wasn't a bad deal at the moment. Try your luck private or chuck it in an auction.

The only value might be in your catalytic converter.  You're lucky now to get a 3 figure sum for a (whole) car for scrap, and that would be with alloys too.

Ahhhh okay. Thanks guys. I'll look to sell then. I'd strongly prefer that anyway.

People will always want a cheap, high mpg car :)  If you started off at 1 penny on Ebay I am sure it will find a reasonable price.

Bang it into auction.  No comeback, you sell without having the great unwashed bothering you on gumtree "u still god car m8?", with a clean conscience.  I am often surprised what cars go through for round here.

Recently had a ford galaxy valued for scrap, a mere £50 because of the scrap value falling out of the market. We did the suggested and listed on ebay for 99p with a list of why it was an MOT fail and the bad and good points (it had 160k on the clock) and had numerous messages within hours of listing it. Eventually let someone, a dealer, take it for £350.... the day later it had an MOT but at least it sold and for more than £50!

Got rid of a dead Zafira recently, got £50 for it as it had alloys and good tyres. The scrappie only offered £25 if the tyres were not good. Obviously that car is twice the size of a Fabia, so best off selling it with some MOT on it.

When I was last at the local scrap yard I asked how much they get for a car when they sell it for scrap. The guy told me £20, since then they have closed down after 42 years in business

Happening a lot I suspect in the scrap metal market right now.  It's only bouyant when ferrous is £100+ a ton, and right now I think its way way down.

For a Fabia with no wheels / tyres you'll be looking at about £15. My rolling she'll is going to be gone with no payment either way
