funny noise during hard cornering (ESP?)

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

during hard left side cornering, car makes funny noise. It sounds as ABS/ESP is kicking in. on UK cars, it might be right side cornering.

My theory is, it has something to do with unbalanced car and most likely ESP is kicking in. If I push it beyond the the initial noise, car starts to understeer.

Interesting is, it does only on left side turns but right side turns...car understeers quietly.

Nothing in diagnostic. Could it be faulty ABS/ESP ring in hub?

It sounds like a mechanical problem like a worn wheel bearing or drive shaft joint.

I've just had the passenger side drive shaft replaced as the cv joint was making funny noises, worse when it was under load, turning right.

that was my first thinking but this funny noise comes on only when car is unbalanced in turn. in other words, if you reached one of ESP/ABS thresholds and tyre is close to sliding

otherwise, during normal cornering there is no noise.

it doesn't sound like metallic, whining bearing noise. it sounds similar to ABS.

CV joint is kinematic joint next to the hub?

Yes. Well there are two on the driveshaft and the outer one had gone on mime.

Sounds more like a wheel bearing, probably left hand side if you hear when turning right.

ABS/ESP is only the brakes being applied to correct the wheel speed on a particular corner to bring the car under control. Only noise you will hear is the brake being applied which unless you have grooved discs shouldn't be that audible within the car.

When a CV joint is going it sounds clunky when setting off or stopping and you wouldn't normally hear it once moving as it is under constant load then.

it is not metallic noise. wheel bearing noise is different. and it would be noisy all the time.

If you guys remember ASR, that is similar noise.

It also sounds like PVC wheel arch is touching tyre :-D I must check out what is hanging there.

Factory suspension is soft and left corners put more load on wheel (for left hand side driver) more than right ones. That might be the cause, combined with broken spring.

My cv joint was making a mainly rumbling noise with occasional clunking and clicking. I thought it was the wheel bearing at first, but it wasn't.

In the end it made a rumbling which increased in volume with speed and was worse after a run at speed - that's when the clicking started under load, including acceleration as well as turning.

I get funny noises too from hard cornering but it's only the ESP kicking in/grabbing on/swearing etc.

Easily Scared Passengers!

(My car doesn't have ESP)
