Quantum Platinum 5w 40

Featured Replies

Am I right in thinking that mkII PD engines without DPF should be using platinum 5w 40 on regular fixed servicing? Ref TPS (parts).

I used 5w 30 currently on long life, but may start changing more often now.

 cheers.

If someone can link ebay - Rapid Auto Care ltd - platinum 5w 40 - (I do not know how to do this yet)

then compare the label which reads "including pd diesel and vehicles fitted with  DPF's".

Yet their description under the TPS link states "engines that are not fitted with a DPF.

Which bit of information is wrong, or am I misreading it?

IS THE LABEL WRONG???...............£AKE????

This listing says the Platinum 5w40 isn't suitable for DPFs, and Longlife 5w30 should be used for them, so for fixed service intervals, non-DPF, you should be fine with 5w40 Platinum. I bought a couple last week at £17 each, now £15 each delivered from this seller. Oil industry very wobbly...Buy more or wait for it to get even cheaper...?

Missed out on that offer!

Just to update you. Quantum oil direct aka Cardiff Audi is currently out of stock of Long Life 3. He will be listing as soon as they get some more in stock as I contacted Tom this week.

So keep an eye on eBay.

If you use long life oil for regular variable servicing, is that a problem?

I'm about to buy the halfords oil. £22.99 for 2L.

Will be cheaper with my trade card.

It's 507.00 grade as per the owners book for my tdi RS.

According to the manual it also says that this grade of oil is used for both variable and fixed intervals. Best to check the owners manual in your car!

£23 for 2 ltr,  :o

I stopped buying Castrol a while back when they reduced the bottle size from 5L to 4L,  But didn't reduce the price,,,, I'll continue to use Quantum which i think is just Castrol with different packaging..

Longlife *is* for variable servicing.

Do you mean fixed interval?  If so, yes it's OK for that too.  That's why most of us say use 504/507 for everything as you can't really go wrong with it.

In the end I caved and went for the Triple QX on Eurocarparts for £45. It is VW 504/507 spec and got some good thumbs up on these forums and just wanted to get it and get it done and hours of searching turned up nothing better!

Longlife III seems well established in the VAG servicing trade though and at £20 you couldn't go wrong really. Probably end up stocking up on a couple bottles when it's back on offer.

Edit - Just seen its back on for £24. Wish I'd sodding waited now!  :dull:

I change the oil every 5000 miles on all of our vehicles. If there's an offer on the correct oil (I use Shell Helix Ultra ECT on the VRS), I buy a few of them so I always have oil available.

You don't have a DPF, 5w40 Platinum is fine.

as above you don't have a dpf so sticking to 5w40 505.01 is fine as it offers better protection for the cam lobes.
