LED Number Plate lights - odd behaviour...

Featured Replies

Just installed a set of

Canbus LED License lamp For SKODA Octavia 1Z

from Aliexpress.

All ok so far; no error message and no need to go near VCDS.

However...

Noticed when SWMBO drove off tonight that when the ignition key was turned on, and just as the DRL lights came on, the rear plate LEDs flashed 3 times and went out. When the headlights were turned on, the LEDs came on as normal and stayed on, but the 3 flashes when the ignition was turned on seems odd behaviour.

Any ideas?

Mine did this, still had to code them through VCDS.

It is the bulb check system.

On normal bulbs the power supplied through the system isn't enough to light the bulbs, but the LED's need much less power so as the car feeds the system to check the bulbs the LED's light up briefly.

The proper name is 'cold start diagnostics', which I understand can be turned off for some functions using VCDS.

Thanks. I can live with it if it falls under the heading of 'expected behaviour'.

Given that all appears OK, (touches wood quickly), would there be any point/advantage to changing the code via VCDS given I've changed from the original units and their associated settings, or can I just carry on regardless of the code now being incorrect?

I would just carry on as normal mate, mine do the same I wouldn't worry.

You can carry on regardless, if you replace the front side lights with LED's it'll do the same.

Cool.

Thanks all.

my front leds do the same every morning i see them reflect in my house window when i turn on the ignition like said above i put it down to the light check system ,

So are these the elusive number plate LEDs that don't affect the bulb-out warning?

The picture on the website shows them as very bright - are they over-bright in real life?

Pics would be great

It will depend on the CECM or BCM fitted, some are much more sensitive than others to LED lighting.

Many have used the same kit but need to use the load resistors to fool the bulb-out system - not sure if the OP did.

Others have needed to have both a halogen and LED bulb connected to avoid warnings as a load resistor didn't fool the system.

In my case as I have a BCM that does support LEDs, I was able to code out the warnings. I don't have load resistors or the blinking/flashing on any of my LEDs.

Whichever LED you fit one of the above methods should resolve the bulb warning issue, on an 08, it'll probably be one of the first two :)

edit:

They are bright but don't seem to suffer from white out too badly as some LEDs do. There is a picture of mine fitted here: http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/364667-my12-elegance-work-log-with-part-numbers-and-coding/?p=4368503
