Airbag light

Featured Replies

The car in issue is 2009 Skoda Fabia Combi. Recently an airbag light lit on my speedometer screen. Computer scan for errors revealed the issue was passenger side seat belt tensioner. My kid must have created a problem by pulling the seat belt and playing with it. Too late to be angry. However, any experiences about this? Does this mean in case of an accident, passenger side air bag would not deploy? Any remedy I could do on my own before I go to a Skoda service?

The seat belt tensioner is sometimes part of the buckle part rather than the seatbelt itself. Before I paid to have the problem sorted I would have a look under the seat. There should be a wire and connector for a seat airbag if fitted (its sometimes under a cover or under the carpet)and possibly another for seatbelt tensioner.

I would disconnect the battery and make sure the connections are secure however the fault code will need clearing before you will know if it is fixed or not.

The two instances I've had airbag faults its just been the connector that has come apart

I'm pretty sure the pre tensioner is in the B pillar, attached to the seatbelt reel.

Also until cleared with VCDS or similar the airbag light will stay on and the system is disabled.

Tried to clear the error but it reappears almost immediately. Do you mean that entire airbag system is disabled or just the passenger side?

AFAIK the whole system is disabled. Exactly what fault are you getting?

My Fabia does not have seatbelt warning, so would it still have such connection in buckle part?

Don't remember the exact code but the wording pointed to the passenger side seatbelt tensioner. I'll ask a friend to read the error code again and get back here. Thanks

Given that nothing bad happened when the code was cleared you're probably ok, but you need to be careful with airbag faults. Attempting to clear certain airbag fault codes without fixing it can cause an airbag to deploy.

:whew: good to know

The ross tech wiki has plenty of info about it. IIRC it's "short to positive" faults that are the dangerous ones.

Hi I accidentally pulled the wrong fuse and I don't have access to a proper scanner is there anyway I can do it without scanner?

No.

Otagolad1, I did this a while back on my Fabia and after getting quotes from workshops to put the light out, I bit the bullet and ordered an X-Tool scanner V401, which did this for me. I think they have now gone up to around £45 (I paid around £37, delivered), Probably due to me keep on going on about how useful they are!!!

I don't know how much they will charge to ship to NZ, but once owned, they do lots of other helpful stuff and you can always sell it on if you no longer own a VW based vehicle.

Fabulous, hand held tool which is dedicated to the VW range of cars, with more stuff then the price would suggest.
