MOT failure for Powerflex Polybush deterioration

Featured Replies

Guys and gals,

it's MOT time for my Furby and just been told that the Powerflex Polybush has deteriorated enough for it to fail the MOT. (I believe it to be the front wishbone one)

I thought these were fit once and forget, so I am somewhat surprised. Am I right about fit once and should last?

I am waiting for pictures from my mate to show the extent/state of it, but thought I would ask here in the mean time....

second edit... anyone know where I can buy a replacement off the shelf?!

Wishbone or console bush?

The receptionist explained it as the wishbone, but picture will be with me in the next 5 minutes so we'll see.

Powerflex website does confirm lifetime guarantee, although only for a replacement part and no other associated costs. Bugger.

I'd be amazed if the bush has deteriorated at all unless it was incorrectly fitted, I've seen polybushes over 20 years old still like new, they do eventually wear out but they don't perish or degrade due to age.

It was fitted my my fully qualified mate mechanic at his garage and its been perfect for the three or four years they've all been fitted.

I'll post the picture when I get it.

Where did you Source / Buy them last time, was it a Trusted Trader?

Why not get the replacements from them, telling them your story and letting their supplier know.

It has to be the console bush, the standard fronts don't give any trouble, I haven't even bothered replacing them on my 2.0 as they're still like new.

I'm pretty sure it was DPM. Certainly a forum sponsor.

They do and are an arse to replace too. But usually when someone has been driving around with the rear bush busted for ages..

OK, so wasn't sent a picture but a video clip, which is showing "excessive play" in the bush....

Yup that's knackered. Fitting std replacement ones is a pain but the 2 peice powerflex ones is simple.

That's the front one. Same bush as the MK2 Golf. The only time I've seen them fail is when they have been tightened in the dropped position. You must do them up with the suspension at a loaded height.

That IS a powerflex bush, that's the whole point of this thread.

Yeah it is the front one. Not sure how long it's gonna take to get a replacement through a warranty claim and the mot runs out on Friday :(

For the hassle vs cost and time I may just replace it myself and not bother....

Or send it back after you've replaced it and sell the new ones to recoup costs.

Not a bad shout.

Tried that before and they rejected it on the afore mentioned basis.

I guess what Sep means is to buy a replacement myself now and sell on the one sent after the warranty clam goes through.

Other than the central steel tube, don't the other bits rotate freely, removing that requirement for this design?

Is the bolt tight?

. You must do them up with the suspension at a loaded height.

That's only with bushes that twist with the wishbone movement?

ie standard metalistic/rubber bushes.

Poly bushes are more like a bearing, the crush tube should be slightly longer than the bushes when they are in the wishbone, then once the crush tube is clamped up tight the bushes move around the tube, hence why you get grease with poly bushes,to help them turn on the crush tube.

Yeah that's how poly bushes work as far as I know.

Gone and paid for a new one and pick it up Friday.

Other reasons for failure: bulges in both front tyre, which are only 4K old, NSR brake showing no force on brake test (brand new rear callipers less than two years ago) OSF ball joint, NS CV gator had a hole in it (OS was replaced last MOT)

Including a full service, the cost of MOT and associated remedial work (including two equivalent replacement tyres) £300. (Not including the bush replacement as hope to get this money back)

Not what I needed just before I book and pay my next two holidays :(

Is the bolt tight?

I've not asked that question TBH, but is that likely to have come loose? I also would bet my last £ that my mate would have picked that up of it was just that.

What brand of tyre are the bulged ones?
