Becker Satellite Navigation

I have a Becker DTM radio-cd-navigation unit fitted in my Octy2 and am happy with it. Quality is very good, the only bitch I've got is with the EON function on the radio -- it only works if you pre-define the stations for Traffic Announcements (or something like that, whatever it is, I haven't got round to doing it yet). They are fairly easy to use -- a few menus are "hidden" and you have to read the manual to know where they are, but apart from that it's all pretty intuitive.

The DTM uses Navsys software, I think, whereas the Traffic Assist uses Navteq. I don't think there's that much difference, but no doubt someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

The only thing I've found that I don't like with the Becker units is that they tend to tell you to turn off the roundabout just as you reach the exit -- which is usually too late if you haven't been paying attention. To be fair, they do tell you well before the roundabout to take the 1st/2d/3rd exit...but if you're not good at counting, well, get ready to go round a few times.

For a lot of countries, postcode navigation is available, and you can choose which kind of route you take -- fastest, shortest, avoiding tolls, etc. -- and in my experience they are pretty accurate. Updates are fairly easy to find, especially on ebay, and especially from German resellers.

I see from the specs online (go to www.becker.de) that the Traffic Assist doesn't connect to the speed pulse signal, so it will rely on being able to pick up satellite signals to tell where it is and where you're going. If you spend a lot of time driving in tunnels or in areas where the satellites cannot be seen, then it might get confused.

If you are looking for sat nav I suggest you have a read of the forums at www.pocketgpsworld.com. It is a mainly UK based site. You can also pick up free database of UK cameras from there. There are pros and cons with every type of sat nav. Decide what you want to use it for and how you will use it and then ask a question on one of the forums.

I want one of these

Gets an excellent write up.
