Tesla Model 3 pre-ordering

@Ryeman

The Scottish Government use the stupid 'Average figures' as well for distance from, not just Westminster.

http://bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-edinburgh-east-fife-48675303

I would just give Scottish Politicians 'Travel Expenses' based on how many miles they do by Electric Vehicle which will be Zero £'s for Free Electric Charging

and give them the lease of a Smart Four Two EV with a 80 mile range.

They should have no issue being only 2.78 miles on Average From a Public Charger, they could get free ferry travel with these short EV's.

If they need Family Transport / Cars they can pay for their own.

  • With 22 pages of thread to read through, I must confess I haven’t bothered BUT have actually now had a test drive of a Model 3 and thought I’d share the impressions here.   As a background,

  • I got quite angry about the luxury car tax thing yesterday morning and cancelled. If they can bring a version in under that 40k threshold I might jump back in. Keeping an eye on the VW ID too.

Oh I agree @Gizmo totally the wrong place to be.

I tended to only do it on long lonely drives at night when very empty roads :D Like the M5 used to be.

@Roottootemoot same article I was reading :D I mis-remembered the distance...

Looking forward to the Citigo iV / e-Mii being available to drive and the order books opening and then see what range it really has.

It really should be the beez neez. They have had enough time to make them perfect given the size.

The Tesla service centre dichotomy.

If you have a unique auto industry model of online direct sales and almost zero maintenance, how do establish and finance a service coverage for minimal income generated ?

I suddenly thought about availability of reg plate - S3XY (Elon’s reason for model numbers)

Not available unfortunately.

So, how about 3SXY ?

Yep !

Got it !

I guess that’s an indication of intent.

(Just goes to show how few know what’s happening in Australia in the EV world.)

Around 15:00 the big short funded by .......

but start at the beginning...ok !

Under what conditions? Dry and sunny (but not hot enough to need air-con)? Or as I said cold dark wet Winter day?

If EV quoted ranges are based on "best case" conditions then we would be right back where we were before WLTP with quoted consumption figures not being achievable in real World use. EV manufacturers need to learn from that stupid mistake and quote figures that Joe/Joanne Public can be confident he /she will achieve.

According to this: https://teslike.com/range/

SR+ has EPA rating of 240 miles (220 is for SR, my bad). It can do 236 miles at 70mph, 218 miles at 75mph, or 199 miles at 80mph.

A LOT more accurate than WLTP rating. General rule of thumb, I usually take EPA range and use 80% of it as all weather achievable range.

eg. In my Leaf, EPA rating is 84 miles. 80% of that is 67 miles, I often drive 60 miles (it's my commute) in winter in my 4 years old car. Wish me luck this winter, not that I'll need it. ;)

I bet lots of Joe/Joanne Public won't use 80%, they will expect 100% and then the media will have a field day with stories on the theme of "my EV marooned me and my baby in snow".

IMHO the range figures published should be worst case, not best case like WLTP. Credit to Tesla for making great efforts to follow that simple rule.

I totally agree. WLTP is not representative at all. But sensible people should know better, from the MPG they are currently getting in comparison to WLTP quoted figures.

Nissan did this with their 40kWh Leaf when they first came out. 3 scenarios and worst case was 110 miles in winter on motorway.

Chevy Bolt in-car display for range has 3 numbers: best, worst and guestimate.

Tesla and Renault had (may still do) a range calculator where you can fiddle with ambient temperature, in-car temperature, speed, etc.

What I really want to see is all EV's quoting a low-temperature time to do 1000km/600miles, assuming ideal quick charger locations. This will not only show worst case, it will also show charging speed, car high speed efficiency and battery thermo management.

The problem with using EPA ranges is that a US mile is shorter than a UK(correct) mile, so Joe Public will be even more misled by that. Working in Km is the way forward, as even the US has that the same as the rest of the world.

I did not know that. I think a Swedish mile is different again?

Yep, 10km is a Swedish Mile, IIRC!

I regularly have no trouble beating ‘combined’ stated figures because we are retired ......and like time distance shrinks.

Actually, that was information I remembered from school. The 'International Mile' is now used by both the UK and US (I found out), so this should be the same. The 'US  Survey Mile' is shorter than a UK mile.

That's the best idea I've read in a long time - bet it will never happen though, as it will make EVs that don't have battery cooling look REALLY bad.

I hope anyone interested in Tesla technology has seen all the Sand Munro/ Tesla pieces on YouTube.

It’s from a production engineering guy who’s never take a single Tesla $ but has worked as a consultant for nearly everyone else.

He is one impressive individual.

The latest Tesla ‘bitch’ is poor customer service.

Panel gaps get a mention but nothing else specific to a particular model.

I’ve regarded them as effectively solid state devices needing little actual servicing.

What’s the answer to customer service complaints when you don’t subscribe to the servicing model?.

People can’t be expected to just be around for the odd contact surely.

Has anyone priced insurance for the 3 ?.

There was a story about ‘write offs’ meaning only Tesla could repair them or use any components.......or some such .

I am currently paying £328 (Superb L&K 190 TDi and have been quoted £301 for a LR Model 3 (exact same comparison regarding mileage and excess etc).

Yes the customer service is a joke at the moment, with many complaining of rushed hand overs (10 - 20 mins) they have also just started a ‘group briefing’ to all the people picking their car up at that time (as they are severely lacking manpower).

With all the complaints of scratched cars and missing paint etc (around the hinges and a few in the panel gaps of bumpers etc) there is no way on earth I would want one in 2019, maybe next year once the demand has diminished but I for one would not be driving away in a £50K car with the amount of defects (no matter how minor) that many cars are being handed over with at the moment as the nearest SC is over an hour away from me and as my car is parked miles away from me at work getting a mobile ranger out is not practical.

Currently the ID.3 is looking more favourable as the specs are slowly being leaked (heated steering wheel and windscreen have just been announced), I will reserve judgement until I actually see the car in 3 weeks though.

For those really interested in the Tesla battery from a very technical aspect, perhaps invest in the 2 hrs -
