  • With 22 pages of thread to read through, I must confess I haven’t bothered BUT have actually now had a test drive of a Model 3 and thought I’d share the impressions here.   As a background,

  • I got quite angry about the luxury car tax thing yesterday morning and cancelled. If they can bring a version in under that 40k threshold I might jump back in. Keeping an eye on the VW ID too.

  • Autopilot saves the day - https://electrek.co/2018/07/28/tesla-model-3-autopilot-avoid-crash-nearmiss-dashcam/

I do wonder about that,  on a brighter note I see they have Formally "broken ground "on Gigafactory 3  in Shanghai   whilst it is already fenced and leveled, what caught my eye was the Mains electric has been laid on, in approx 30+ DAYS,   what passes for normal in china is apparently 80 days,      wouldn't even get the ink dry on the paper round here    not to mention elf and safety

I suspect Chinese miners wouldn’t mind a bit of elf n safety though.

(when you have over 1 billion people, just how much is one life worth)

good day to buy shares?  not advise

Latest from the Tesla guys is a base model 3 will be around the 30k mark with the performance model around 60k. Due to get model 3 showroom cars at least around April/May time apparently.

According to the guy I spoke to people are buying the old stock of the Model S 70D and then planning to trade in for a model 3 later on as the guaranteed values on the Model S are ballpark for a 3. Not sure how true this all is, just what I was told.

There’s going to be a Model 3 to view at Touchwood in Solihull soon.

How much are the 3s going to be for the UK market?

Swap dollars for pounds.

30k then hopefully as promised

Is a Tesla going to be all that special when the competition finally arrives?  Because they have had a free run for a long time I would have thought.

Hopefully it comes out as a good thing for all parties to push the envelope further and most importantly quicker. THe small incremental changes in the current automobile industry are designed in to keep us suckered. I am sure leaps could be bigger so Tesla is providing a positive motivational factor, hopefully/

Hopefully not, but I don’t mean that as a criticism of Tesla in any way.

They gave the entire industry a huge kick up the backside but if other manufacturers are now able to give them a run for their money then it means a better choice for us.

The auto industry is facing a potentially massive change with the customary caution but they are going to have to respond quickly when the public finally discovers ‘range’ isn’t such a threat after all.

Imagine massive inventories of ICE with declining demand...........some will almost certainly go to the wall.

Well, it depends on what you look for in a car.

I would gladly buy a cloth seat, no premium sound, no sunroof, steel wheel, plain paint, software locked mid-range no thrills Model 3 for £30k-£34k new. All I want from my Tesla is OTA updated, evolving Autopilot, Supercharger access, and reliable phone app.

Basically I couldn't care less about normal car niceness or its looks. I want a Tesla for Tesla specific features, their USP is the supercharger network. I wouldn't dream of driving long distance in even a 300 miles range Kona.

So many Aussies have 2 cars and basically any BEV will do the job.

Our slow witted Government has muttered that a nation standard might be a good idea for recharging infrastructure.

Seeing we have Australian Design Rules (ADR) that shouldn’t be too demanding to implement.........?

I agree, with 2 cars, any EV will do the job. Not a lot of people drives 100 miles a day, even first-gen Leaf will be able to cover the journey most of the days.

In Europe at least, I think we have a solid standard. Type 2 for up to 32 amp AC (7kW or 22kW); CCS for rapid (50kW) or hyper (175kW) DC charging. If I were a betting man, I'd say Australia will follow Japan with charging standard: Type 1 and Chademo.

For the next car I buy, I'd be looking to replace our long distance car. A Tesla is pretty much the only option, most rapid charging network locations only have 1 or 2 stalls, Tesla supercharger locations are usually 4 minimal, 8-12 stalls per location are popping up these days. Then there's the ease of use with Superchargers, compared to minefield of payment methods by different companies.

I mean, I wouldn't dream of driving a likes of Kona across Europe, due to so many different payment methods and membership requirements one has to research. It's easy with a fossil fuel car, it's even easier with Tesla supercharger network.

So yes, I still think Model 3 SR is very special with cheaper/more range competition out there, it is the cheapest (with warranty) ticket into supercharger network.
