66 Plate or be kind to the wife and kids?

Featured Replies

About to pull the trigger and order a superb.  I can hand my company car back on 8th August and swop to a car allowance, but could hang on to the company car until 8th September.  While I can't wait to get my hands on my first Skoda, I thought it's probably sensible to request 1st September delivery so I can get the new plate, better resale etc....

but.......we only have one car and the good lady suddenly realised that if we ordered now, we could have 2 cars for over the summer meaning she can drive the kids about in the summer holiday and not have to borrow the one car.  Although we are on holiday for 2 weeks so it'll only be used for 4 weeks.

So, what would you do.  Be mean, save money and wait for the new plate, or be kind and let the loved ones have extra days out during the school holidays?  What hit would I likely take on resale between a 16 and 66 plate if I sold in say 4 years

For info I'm ordering a 1.4TSI manual SE L Exec with Modus wheels so I don't think the wait time is as bad as some L&K versions.

To me, family ALWAYS comes first and to hell with the number plate!

Happy wife happy life :D

Life's too important to make a number plate a priority.

Each and everytime!

Depending on what model/extras you decide on you might not get it until September anyway, even if you order now!

Sound advise people.....family more important than money and number plates.  I'll see what the lead time if for the model I'm ordering.

Then add several weeks.

This. Unfortunately you won't have any idea of the actual lead time until you order, and even then it will vary wildly week to week. Dealer will probably tell you 12 weeks.

Just to add, there's loads of pre owned cars in the skoda approved site if you want one quicker and save a bit of cash if flexible with options etc...

If I ask for it to be built and registered asap and then the build date starts slipping (sounds like you're all talking from experience!), can I change my instruction to register after 1st Sept?  The worse case would be the car gets registered on 15th August when we go on holiday for 2 weeks then we don't get the benefit of having the car early over the summer and also miss out on the 66 plate.

The general experience on here is that there is no such thing as asap! If it turns out that your car arrives at dealer within a couple of weeks of the new reg then you may be able to arrange to pay but hold on collection until 66 plate- seems that some people did that with 16 plates.

Probably get shot down in flames but.....only 2 weeks (10 working days) without 2 cars, is it such a hardship? Don't know what the difference in value is between a 2016 65 or 66 plate but there will be some, maybe a look on Parkers will give some advice.

I held mine back for about 8 days for a 2016 16 plate, not for the value but because I'm old school and I know it would have just niggled me. If you are getting a forecourt deal from a garage who want to push out some last minute cars before a new plate with incentives then I can understand it, but a new factory order, personally I would hold back.

Ultimately it might be out of your control anyway. Mine took 4 months from factory to delivery for a SE Business with extras and I considered that fairly quick judging by the delays some have experienced round here.
