Nice one cheers,I will have to buy one, was hoping it was the one I had for my old Leon the hollow multi spline type

Got a 17mm bolt and two nuts handy?

Lock them together and save buying a new tool.

This is what I thought as well, until I got underneath and checked and saw mine was a 10mm Allen head. May be worth having a quick look to be completely sure

(I have the same engine/ gearbox combo by the way)

Ok best to have a look then cheers

I changed my gearbox oil last year & im sure it was a allen key head but im sure it wasnt as big as a 17mm as i had one of those & had to go looking for a smaller one so 10mm could well be correct. Id suggest you only use genuine gear oil as well as some after market oils make the gear change notchy, mine needed a synthetic gear oil.

I did mine on the ramp at work but it was easy enough, just make sure you get the correct genuine oil. Once the undertray is off, just undo the filler plug then undo the drain plug & drain the oil then re fit the drain plug & fill until it runs out of the filler plug hole(car must be level)* note this is correct on the vrs 6 speed box 5 speed boxes & others may be different, check before carrying out this job*,i used a large syringe with some pipe on the end to fill the box,i think mine took around 2.3 litres,i measured the amount that came out just to be sure i was putting the same amount back in.Dealers sell the oil in 1 litre containers so you will need to buy 3 litres.

In some Octavias the gearbox isn't level so you can't just fill it until it overflows.

I mean the car should be on level ground or a vehicle ramp,5 speed boxes fill through the speedo drive i think but we are not on about those but i will amend my post, paul has the same car as me thats why i said that.

For my 6 gear gearbox (02Q, LHD if I remember correctly) it wasn't 17mm but something like ~10mm. I wasn't sure about that so I had purchased that 17mm key before and it was completely useless :)

I just did mine today, only took half hour. I took out the air box to make it handier for refilling. 2009 vrs tdi 6MT. Allen key on mine.

My Octavia Mk2 TDI (103kW/140 DIN HP) has a HDV 6-gear manual transmission.

In your experience, is there a smarter way of establishing the plug type and size other than taking a dive?

I've seen a parts diagram which shows both the XZN M-16 raised-center plug and an Allen one (the latter appears rather big) but no clear indication (serial No.s or similar) as to the application of either.

Thank you for your feedback.

I believe that you won't find any certain information.

Even the official dealer wasn't sure whether I needed LUK or SACHS flywheel until it was taken out... and you are talking about a plug...

Thanks Jevpls - yes, you may have a point there...

Guess I'll just have to keep different socket sets at hand, plus the somewhat exotic XZN piece.

Cheers.

I believe the bolt spec/design were changed a few times.  I bought two recently, and got a third when I bought the sump pan. They were all slightly different.  This is oil sump bolt, not gearbox though.
