Xenon Headlights

Featured Replies

Hi Guys

I collected my new (to me) and first Yeti a couple of days ago. It has Xenon headlights fitted. I know they should have self levelling lights but I was just wondering why you can't have manually adjustable Xenon lights?

This is the second vehicle I've had with Xenon lights and my experience with them before was not good with them always too high and other vehicles flashing their lights at me especially over slight humps or rises in the road! Last night was my first time out in the dark with the Yeti and sure enough I was getting flashed at again when on dip beam! You can clearly see road signs ahead being lit up so it's obviously shining into oncoming traffic!

Does anyone know if a main dealer can reset these lights so they are a little lower?

My 2012 model had manual adjustment via a little nurled barrel down beside the headlight switch.

tankman, If not too far away, why not take it back & mention this to them.

In my experience, most drivers aren't aware the level adjustment exists nor that you should adjust the headlights down when carrying passengers or a heavy load in the rear. With Xenon's this would cause even more glare which is probably why the ECE regs state the headlights should self adjust when using a light source greater than 2000lm.

If your xenons are factory fit, correctly aligned and working there should be no need to adjust them on the road either. Anyway, on to the solution :)

Xenon lights also have the adjustment screws that halogen lights do, so you can adjust them if too high. Ideally you would use VCDS and use the following procedure http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/cars/xenonalignment.html alternatively, you can point the headlights at a wall and adjust them down fractionally yourself.

There is also a chance that one of the suspension level sensors has been damaged as this can also cause the headlights to be too high. They are normally fitted to the passenger (UK) side suspension if you want to do a visual check.

It's a legal requirement that Xenon headlights (whether factory or retro fit) have automatic levelling and washers.

I hitch my caravan up and the lights auto adjust, the dip coverage is as expected.

I have been flashed once or twice but I believe it is because they are so bright.

I marked the back wall of my garage for setting my lights back when I was first

married. You can measure and mark a fence or make something to compare

loaded and unloaded dip positions, like a board leant against a tripod or even a bin.

I've got the 'little nurled barrell' but when you've xenon lights it's for adjusting the dash panel lighting brightness.

I remember from my previous vehicle that it was a legal requirement to have auto levelling.

Thanks for that info.I certainly didn't know there was any adjustment you could do yourself. When the weather dies down a bit I must get under the bonnet and have closer look! Excuse my ignorance but what is 'VCDS'?

VCDS is a 3rd party diagnostic interface made by rosstech. It allows you to do some of the procedures that the dealer tools are able to but is much more affordable :)

Those of us with "poverty" versions get 2 knurled barrels; 1 does the light height setting, the other the dash light level.

From a previous thread on here I would be very careful about trying to adjust the HID lights without using VCDS. I thought it was actually impossible and damaging.

And MUCH more comprehensive.

I've never used anything like VCDS before, there's not much need on my other vehicles (old Land Rovers)!

I think it might be wise to contact the supplying main dealer and hear what they've got to say!

There is a member in Newtown with VCDS, Russ, but I would say you were better going to the dealers as they can check it all against a beam setter.

As you can see there's another Yeti around Llani !

Tankman, if I were you I would take the car back ASAP to the dealer you bought it from, as it was only a couple of days ago. if it was a Skoda dealer and get it booked in for a headlight alignment check and adjust under warranty. The dealer will hook the car up to their diagnostic machine and check the alignment. Using the computer to reset the basic position for the headlight aim. I was having problems with my car, getting flashed occasionally and failing the MOT. It turned out that at some point the left side headlight had a left hand drive unit fitted.

I now know of 4, but not sure which is yours!

If you see me in town, say hello. I'm normally wearing a leather hat with feathers.

And I'm an ex-Landy nut!!

We have met around town once. My wife knows you both from the pet shop.

The dealer did MoT the car before I collected it so you would think that if they were out of alignment it should have shown up! It's just under 3 years old so there is still some manufacturers warranty on it. The only problem is that the dealer is 80 miles away so it's easy to just pop in.

There's some strange people wandering around Llanidloes (or Llani to the locals) ........... but it's a lovely place!

I did ring the main dealer and they suggested I brought the car back so they could check the alignment which I might do next week.

Russ

I have tried the Xenon reset procedure (via VDSC) and doesnt engage the reset/learning position - from some shoogling i gathered that VCDS isnt compatible on this feature with every controller over the VAG brands, just some of them

TIBET I was flashed at a few times by oncoming motorists so I had Allams check the (Xenon) headlight alignment. The offside light was slightly higher than it should be. This was checked on the MOT light tester and quickly adjusted.

I couldn't notice that one light was higher than the other despite the sharp beam cut-off. No one else got upset after the adjustment and TIBETs II and III have been fine throughout.
