Quick Question About Standard Exhaust

Featured Replies

Does anybody know if the standard exhaust on the Octavia VRS (02 reg) is stainless steel?

i have a standard exhaust but dunno if its stainless steel....do they do a stndard exhaust in stainless steel ??

Joel

standard exhaust is not stainless... the trim on the tailpipe is though... if you look up the tailpipe you'll see the twin exit steel pipes inside...

Do a magnet test.........if the magnet sticks then its not stainless steel

PS. check away from welds, because a magnet will usually stick to a stainless steel weld.

Since when dont magnets stick to stainless steel?

Ferritic stainless steels i.e 400 series are generally use as cold worked cheap stanless steel parts for automotive applications as it can be bright polished and are magnetic.

300 series Austenitic stainless steels i.e exhausts are non magnetic in the main, if it is magnetic it is a cheap 400 series st st. Most exhausts are 304 st.St. as this is cheap and easily worked whilst giving good corrosion resistance.

The Standard octavia / VRS Exhaust is aluminised Carbon steel with a 400 series tailpipe.

:iagree:  Phil

Thanks..... daver

I could'nt of explained that any better myself :)

Ah rite so they still do - just only cheaper stainless steel, that would explain why my old workbench was magnetic. (never tried SWMBO's Miltek exhaust - 304?)

Ooooooh, busted!

only the tail pipe is stainless the rest is alumin/steel mix

just change mine over to supersprint racing rear box and original was definitly

corroded so no the original is'nt stainless on any grade

Actually, it's more than likely it IS stainless as standard. Stainless is now used on, as far as I know, ALL standard exhaust systems. It's the only way to meet euro emission regs, on the life expectancy of the emission control systems (90% must be in reg, after 10 years or 100,000 miles). That doesn't mean they won't corrode a little, though.

checked with a dealers part desk... the standard vRS system IS NOT stainless but what someone else said.... aluminium / steel mix and a stainless tail pipe trim.
