Did a 2016 Honda Type R get given any consideration as a possible?

(How are the prices of the Type R where you are buying?)

 

 

 

No not really. Looks is too much for me, and is so little a family car compared to the Golf that is automatically ruled out. Ride quality is not the finer also I read and I hate to admit that but the Golf's interior feels way more premium than anything else I went in except from the S3 and the bimmer. As a result i didn't ever consider going for one.

 

PS. Just realised the actual winner is not even in the thread's title...

First ever actual photos of the car in Carbon steel grey metallic on Belvedere/Quaranta wheels (the combo I'm after). Only picture I had so far was the lousy rendering of the configurator that doesn't even get close. Relieved to see it looks tons better "in the flesh" than in the configurator, it's official: I'm deeply in love with it as of tonight...

 

The glossy back of the seats might be a bit controversial, think a matte finish would have suited it better but it's only a minor niggle, in the end I'm going to be sitting on the nicer side.

 

Those exhaust tips look at last as big as they should be on a GTI, great :clap:  (and I always preferred single exhaust tip design rather than a twin-tip on any hatchback out there)

The most exciting thing that I'll be doing to my current car will be partially reverting it to stock as it will be going!

 

As for the next one, if it turns out as sorted (all-around) as reviews claim there's only two things I can think of:

 

- Upgraded down-pipe keeping stock cat-back (no extra noise this time thank you) + stage 2. Probably intake and inter-cooler with it to be on the safe side.

 

And if I dare take it to the track and throw it around:

 

- VWR 6pot 360mm monoblock caliper big brake kit.

 

That's it, i think/hope the rest of the car will be just perfect. So happy I won't have to touch the suspension on this one...

The ECU and map is going to be more interesting with the 265ps engine and Overboost. Not like just a remap on a Leon 265. You surely will be leaving it with a valid warranty for a while to see if VW got this set up right.

Already asking tuners about it, guess it's hard to say without having laid their hands on one yet but being a VW ECU I don't worry too much, they'll unlock it eventually. Not something I'll be doing during the first year though (think so...)

 

The engine code is the exact same as in Cupra 265 incidentally, both are CJXE, but I guess different software to give the extra +25bhp and 30Nm of torque for 10". Still time for that though. I believe this car won't be just all about power though, driving it must be quite rewarding if I can trust Mr.X's confessions, we'll see... Definitely a great place to be in. Liked the R's interior and the GTI's even more, now the Clubsport looks so much more promising than both of them, now if I could only focus to my usual tasks again...

No idea how they started, but it seems the Clubsport can keep behind it no problem and I also think it has that bit cleaner lines compared to the R which goes a bit wider at some points. One thing I notice on some tight corners is how it pulls towards the apex exactly when you thought it will start to understeer, E-VAQ doing its magic probably? It sounds like what I had read from a few reviewers of the Cupra praising the smooth and efficient diff's operation: "You have to be brave with it during cornering and it will reward you, just when you think you 'd start to understeer and would (in any other FWD) normally lift off, you must keep pushing and you'll feel a force pulling you towards the inside of the corner contrary to what you'd expect." Definitely seems like that at some points in the video.

What is the truth on the Kerb Weights.?

I see the GTI Clubsport at 1,375 as a manual, and a Golf R 5 door manual given as 1,361kg and a DSG at 1,401kg.

 

Those weights can not be correct, the Front Wheel drive can not weigh more than the AWD Golf.

So one DSG v Manual, 5dr v 3dr etc.

You must be looking at different weights, brochure clearly states:

 

R DSG: 1495 (1476 manual)

Clubsport DSG: 1395 (1375 manual)

 

CS is a good 100kg lighter.

Yes, pretty much same recipe. Don't know if the 10% stiffer Clubsport suspension compared to the GTI means equal to Cupra stiffness, or more. But all in all very similar, powerful engine, great suspension setup and a front diff that works wonders.

 

At some point before I found out the Clubsport existed I thought the ideal car for what I was after would be: Cupra chassis and setup, exterior design by Audi, all packed under a VW badge for that extra bit of build quality compared to the SEAT and also to keep residuals high and avoid un-necessary Audi expensiveness. 2 out of those 3 can be considered "checked" already and the interior and exterior design of the CS more than made up for what I liked in the S3 looks. What would I have done If it wasn't for George bringing it up at some point...

I'm not a ClubSport customer, but I'm now being tempted with a good offer on a vRS 230 hatch.

Perhaps a nice sensible choice for the senior citizen, with the good diff, & decent brakes, with some tuning potential if I feel the need?

you mean Estate?  The vRS 230 Octavia is a good car I think and more practical than the Golf. Gets the diff that both the GTI and 220 vRS absolutely need and as you say it can get to ~300bhp rather easy. For me it wasn't a contender as I don't like the front end of it and it doesn't have the CJX engine with the bigger turbo.  Otherwise it is a very nice choice for anyone after a practical Q car.

Have a really good look at the lower dash and see what you think of some of the materials.

They're good but not great.

Also can you live with an electronic hand brake? I hated it in the A3 saloon

I've had two Mk7 GTD's and whilst I grew to like the eBrake....it has to be said it had it's flaws.

On both cars randomly the auto hold would get a bit sticky....you'd go to pull away and the car would resist not wanting to release the brakes. On my last one it started doing it quite a bit....bit dangerous if I needed to pull out somewhere and it decided it didn't want to go.

Worse still on my last one...the handbrake disengaged itself 3 times after being applied....one occasion the car rolled away from my house towards an intersection with my 4 year old son still in the back.

Like most things...great when they work...not so good when they don't:-S

Not a fan either. But since there was no choice for a traditional handbrake I had to go with it. Disengaging on its own sounds very scary tbh.

 

I take it your was a manual? Cos with a DSG you don't need to bother with applying the handbrake with the auto hill-hold function, haven't used the handbrake for that reason since I bought the Fabia and almost forget to keep the clutch where I have to when I go in manual cars nowdays.

 

Not many slopes in Southern Sweden either, most cases you could park your car leaving in N and handbrake disengaged  :D

What has happened with the Fiat / Chrysler set up is interesting and not just electric handbrakes, it is the whole stopping procedure and Park, 

and engine stopping.

 

How the Electric Handbrake thing came in is odd.

EU Type Approval & Construction & Use always required a Mechanic Connection with the Hand Brake / Emergency Brake, 

Line Brakes etc used to get fitted to Rally / Motorsport / Off Roaders but a Handbrake Cable was still required.

 

Software Errors (and Electrics and H20 mixed)  and lack of Servicing & the Drivers not Reading or understanding owners manuals mean new technology is not always moving safety features on. IMO.

 

People wonder why Big SUV's and the likes have 'Warning Labels' and Instructions on how to use the gears on Sun Visors,

(sticker on visor, the gears are not there!)

it is because there is never enough warnings you can  put on vehicles for the stupid.

No, I meant the hatchback.... Maybe in europe the non-estate / combi version is referred to as a "sedan"?

 

In the UK Skoda UK refer to the Estate or Hatchback versions, but it's really a notchback, like the current Superb, the Mondeo or the Insignia.

I think that the estate is too noisy / boomy to live with but maybe I've been spoilt by my current TwinDoor Superb?

 

Looks for me aren't so important, especially if one want's to blend in with the traffic, & if remapped, an other 40/50 ps is probably available, so the lack of a big turbo isn't the end of the world.

Yeah I fail to see the connection with the my quoted part either?

 

Plus that "article" is so superficial that I doubt would be of any interest to any person with a minimum presence in car forums. Like trying to explain car tuning to my grandmother, even then I think I'd use a more detailed explanation  :D
