GTI Clubsport after all...

Featured Replies

The most exciting thing that I'll be doing to my current car will be partially reverting it to stock as it will be going!

As for the next one, if it turns out as sorted (all-around) as reviews claim there's only two things I can think of:

- Upgraded down-pipe keeping stock cat-back (no extra noise this time thank you) + stage 2. Probably intake and inter-cooler with it to be on the safe side.

And if I dare take it to the track and throw it around:

- VWR 6pot 360mm monoblock caliper big brake kit.

That's it, i think/hope the rest of the car will be just perfect. So happy I won't have to touch the suspension on this one...

Not sure that article is specific to the GTI Clubsport?

http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/car-news/consumer-news/59931/watchdog-engine-remapping

Only related slightly to previous comment above by the Owner to be of the GTI Clubsport.

Also only put it here for general comment, against as George identified, a resurrected article of  sometime back. Why?

Simply Clever Blue Sky thinking from VW.

Just keep pumping out better and better model versions of the models they already have.

Raid the parts bins, troll the previous Concepts and Projects that were shelved by Martin Winterkorn or that the VW Board would not approve.

Just get Column Inches in Motroring Press / Media and online.

Their Vehicles are Type Approved already, the engines tried and tested in the various, VW / Seat /Audi & Skoda,

just a mix and match of Engines , Drivetrains, Suspension / Steering & Braking and you can produce Warm / Hot / Mega Hot cars.

If they just do some Upgrading and Performance enhancements to Skodas that would be nice,

but then Skoda is not in the headlines getting bad publicity in the way that 'VW' keep making the headines even though it does all

include, Skoda / Seat / Audi / Porsche.

I don't think that VW will ever allow Skoda to sell real performance cars, it's not how they want the brand perceived.

"Simply Clever" isn't just a clever marketing slogan.....

As for profits, undercutting VW's own margins by producing slightly better value Skoda's is probably not a great idea.

It would be simple to spend a little more money on the Octy vRS & give it the "quality feel" of a Golf GTi, but although

vRS sales might increase there is a real risk that the more profitable GTi would loose some market share.

Skoda isn't Seat, it is profitable already, & I suspect that VAG would love the brand to steal sales from the lies of Volvo

& Ford / Vauxhall-Opel, but they really need to retain their premium brand customers to survive, & producing competing

cars from Skoda has to be a no-no.

just my thoughts...........

Are VW promoting any more powerful / lighter / faster / sportier diesel versions of current production models?

So, a limited edition of a limited edition? Golf - GTI - Clubsport - S, that starts to become long  :D

Read about it the other day but if the ditched rear seats is true, it will be more of a threat to the Megane RS Trophy than to the GTI/R/Clubsport. Unless VW confirms otherwise upon release, I find it hard to believe they spent actual time designing yet another suspension for the S as they did for the Clubsport already by changing dampers, suspension setup, steering rack, re-programmed XDS and E-VAQ etc. So then the S differences compared to the Clubsport seem very minor. Losing the everyday practicality for just 15-20 kg off and a ditching of the overboost function, only? You can achieve that on a Clubsport and still have a family car that is much more track-focused than the rest of the Golfs, I don't see the point. I'd expect a properly stripped out lightweight track-car instead. Oh, and no brake upgrade option? again?  :dull:   Sounds more like a Clubsport variant than an actual Golf variant.

The CEO of VW now was the CEO of Porsche and all his Heads of Departments were with Porsche,

it is rather simple for them to turn out rather special editions of VW's or Audis.

They have the knowledge and experience and the parts are already there.

Leave parts out, use good parts where needed and construct roll cages, it is what they are good at.

No more Das Auto.   Just 'Can Do & will do.'  the customers will flash the cash, or sign the finance.

Sorry totally off topic other than it involves a VW Golf,

but i did not want to start a new thread but wanted to share.

this is a rather special Golf Mk2 2.0 16v Turbo with a rather good driver vs a 991 GT3RS driven by Chris Harris also a rather good driver.

I liked the quotes that VW would not state how much the rear spoiler applies in downforce....just that the normal GTI has 2xtimes the lift of the Clubsport has in downforce...But now actual measurement or "activation" speed i.e. at what speed it applies that force..but defiantly flatter in the curves than some pics of a standard GTI....

I also note the car has the same standard GTI front headlamps, i.e. no LED indicators & single "U"

'Anoraks: note the roof is always painted black'.

Except when VW are showing a car so that we can give it 'Big Up publicity'.

Lots of column inches are given over to VW because they raid the parts bin and turn out a limited edition attention grabber.

So produce only 400 models for customers, have them pay to buy and VW have the 40th Anniversary News very cheaply.

It would be bigger news if those that order one are put in a Lottery and 40 Cars are given away to a lucky 40 that are on the waiting list.

The Skoda 110 year Anniversary Models were a bit of a let down, not much of a nod the the Decades of Motorsport Racing Heritage and success with Small Capacity Light weight cars.

Ok,so the S is THE faster FWD around the ring as of now, the record goes to VW and R and Clubsport owners are also happy as the track-exlcusive S is not a threat to any daily driver.

Can we know see how fast is a standard Clubsport around the ring please?? A car that is of actual buying interest? Cos I have a feeling it shouldn't be too far behind.

Great car the Megane, but hardly interesting for me personally as it's too one-dimensional. Too firm suspension (the R and Clubsport are more forgiving even on Race mode and they come with the DCC adaptive damping), can't carry a family around, and lacks the interior quality and overall refinement of a Golf. If I was buying a car for personal use exclusively it'd be top of my list but I need to do so many more things with it other than just take it for fast spins.

newbie69, have you watched the Leon Cupra on this vid?

Yep, that one and the previous car of the year Cupra participation, shows how capable and driving focused a FWD MQB car can be with the right suspension, e-vaq and a good set of brakes and tyres. Now add to that a bit of aero and a quicker steering wheel and you have the reason I don't know how to fill my next 4 months awaiting delivery...

Love how everyone reports how chuckable and adjustable the Clubsport (and Cupra I believe) is and how neutral on the limit as opposed to what you'd normally expect from a FWD car. Can't wait to get my hands on it...

I have great respect for the people at EVO, I still have the first ever copy edition & remember buying it. That video is a very good find as not done in a slide it everywhere show of way, but lets sensibly drive the socks of it..

It handles way better & understeer??...& on a damp track you would expect straight on at the corners...It looked so much fun, proper driving in the style which I like to achieve, & I like the fact he stated that you can rely on the rear when driving on the edge, which you can't generally with a FWD, ..Same way I feel about my Golf estate, I can rely on the rear (I have 80kg more weight, but also better aero as full retro fit undertrays & longer roof).

I'll eat my hat now...I recon it could cope with more conditions than I was expecting for a FWD...all I can say is WOW...feck the GTI get one of those.....I wonder if on a R you could lock the rear out (like it does in ECO) in Race mode...VCDS tweak perhaps??

This was my point when we were debating on the capabilities of a Cupra/Clubsport in other less FWD-favouring conditions (unless talking silly low traction of-course). These cars are not your typical "go faster" traditional FWD hot-hatches that will just suffer and drive wide, their focused chassis and LSD (really can't beat that thing when it comes to corners) provides so much more driving enjoyment and efficiency. I remember the comments of some Cupra reviewers about the e-vaq that you actually had to fight your instinct of lifting and keep on the throttle to believe that you can go that fast around a corner in a FWD and I was very happy to read/listen to the exact same things about the Clubsport when the first videos/reviews were out. I haven't come across a direct technical comparison between the Cupra and the Clubsport  as to what differences might exist between the two, (similarities are much more anyway) but according to that suspension head guy, on the Clubsport, although everything is already a little bit more tightened compared to a standard GTI and R,  they have shifted the balance towards a stiffer rear axle even more which can only mean one thing when you over-do it with the throttle: sideways-fun

That video shows that very clearly as there is no lifting of the inside rear wheel & the car does not snap sideways either....I have driven various Golf, MK4 GTI, MK4 R32 back to back, but have not driven the MK7 GTI, But have driven a MK7R, so maybe my previous experience thought that the basics of FWD would not be overcome with what VAG have done fro the Leon & the Clubsport.

So then 4 months waiting then? So back to those threads of mods I linked to earlier, ....thoughts??.... :D

Exactly.

Obviously what this guy does on 3:47 is not really "needed" per se to go faster, but shows what the chassis is capable of in different less grippy conditions should you ask it to...  :p

(subs may be needed to be turned on unless you speak Dutch!)

Yes, mods and reading about GTIs and Rs in general is how I try to spent my time. And daily checking of youtube/magazines for more reviews and tests, seems not many people have gotten their hands on one of them yet. That brake thread was such a disappointment. A good start with some real brake discussion in the first 4 pages, then it all turned into an ordering and tracking update of the Stoptech sale. I think I'll leave them as they are in the first months and do my first track day with just uprated pads, fluid and maybe lines and see how it turns out.

Might throw a JB1/JB4 unit on though    They are much rated on VW forums and the torque reserves they unlock for the money, is just silly.

That video I have seen & is what I referring to as "throwing it around & sliding it everywhere", you can see he is taking it wrong to upset the balance & swinging it to smoke the tyres. The EVO video he is taking a better line & on some corners pushes with more throttle & opposite lock to get it to RWD slide around the corner in a very neat way...

& yes that thread did go on about stoptech...... I would buy VWR or the Vagbremtech mods with my £££

Yes the wet helps to detach the tyres easier and if you've got a good chassis you can rely on doing as he does, but on a dry track tarmac this deliberate upsetting is probably the only way to break traction in these things.

VWR all the way for me too. The fat they're MK7 specifically designed offers big confidence. And I know Stoptech claim their caliper bridge offers great stiffness and all, but a decent monoblock will always be better in my eyes.

Agreed, but still cannot believe how "fluid" the Leon is around that damp track on 19" rims & "track"/road tyres....just WOW...

Stiffening bridge...marketing dept anyone???

I wouldn't mind a set of these:-
