Replacing 'swing' stereo

Featured Replies

Hi everyone

I've not been active on the forum for a while since selling my old Octavia VRS back in 2011 but as we have a little one on the way, a Yeti seemed like an ideal latest purchase. So today we picked up our face lift 14 plate Yeti 1.2 TSi and we're both very impressed with it!

However, the one thing we are intrigued about doing is swapping out the 'swing' stereo unit and fitting an upgraded item. So i'm just wondering what everyone's thoughts are about which unit to upgrade to and what it might involve.

Any thoughts and opinions very welcome.

Thanks, Matt

Pretty sure all the units are the same size so in theory there is nothing stopping you fitting a bolero, amundsen or columbus.

I'd suspect some coding with VCDS would be needed so the new unit would talk to the car correctly.

I swapped out a to the car a  bolero for a columbus and it was a pretty pain free experience (needed a new surround).

Thanks for the quick reply! Yeah I was looking at either the Bolero, Amundsen or Columbus and found one from a salvaged car which was a 2012 Superb. Do you think it would be a case of swapping them then getting it coded?

Thanks again

pretty much, mine needed a new surround, the bolero and columbus are exactly the same size and a standard connector on the back.  the front surround was the only difference, hence the need for a new one to fit around the columbus (cost around 25 quid from a skoda dealer).

You'll also needed a GPS receiver if you go for a columbus but thats not expensive and just sticks on a cross bar just under the box on the top of the dash (dead easy to remove).

I've a columbus, surround, GPS and vcds all sitting doing nothing, if someone wants it I'd be happy to help fit and make sure its all working (Manchester area).

A good while ago, I replaced the Swing with a Bolero in my Yeti and it was straight forward.  I did not require a replacement surround as the Bolero fitted in the Swing surround.  No coding was required either.

Hmmm...

Bit of an aside, sorry, but I really like my Bolero system and would like something similar setup in my shed (where I only have 12V supply). Is it as simple as getting hold of an old Bolero (or similar), making a nice wooden box for it(!) and hooking up a 12V supply and some speakers? How would it cope with the 12V supply going on and off frequently?

That would work but don't forget the aerial!

Why does the 12v supply go on and off? If it's because you switch the 12v off when you leave the shed then I suspect any stored stations would be lost although it would not be difficult to provide a battery to backup those settings. The current required would be minimal so a very small battery would be adequate. It could be connected via a diode so that the main 12v supply would affect it.

Not sure if the Bolero has been updated but the unit in my wife's 2010 car is not very good at all.  It doesn't hold a station very well and will often switches to another station at random. The touch screen can also be temperamental. We wouldn't really want another one in a new car! As I say, maybe the unit has been updated and improved over the years!

I think you've got a bad one there. I've had 3 cars with the Bo;ero fitted and had no problems.

I've got a columbus and facia for a Yeti for sale in the classifieds section if you're interested.

My 2014 Bolero has switched itself on 3 times in the last month. Only on sunny days when the rays are directly on the screen.

Every time the power goes off and comes back on you'll need to input the security code again. Then there's the CAN issue where the unit will shut down every 30 minutes and you'll need to press the "On" button to bring it back on again, but as it's just the power down due to no CAN signal it won't require the code here (unless the 12v power also goes off).

Just add a solar charger for the battery and jobs a good 'un. Power can be left on then?

Thanks, yes, there's no good reason for the 12v to be switched off - it's batteries charged by solar. The powering down every 30min is something I hadn't thought of. I've noticed this sitting in the car with the ignition off. Can this be disabled?

There's a fix, which I can do for you. Essentially, the feature can't be turned off as it's a communication protocol between the car and the head unit, and you don't have a car. You need to fool the head unit into thinking it's connected to a car and ignition turned on.
