Fabia SDi 2001 Front Brake Pads

Featured Replies

Hi. Just about to order new disks and pads for wife's Fabia. Got an option for pads with or without wear indicator. No idea what's fitted. Not going out to take off wheel as I have man-flu and high temperature now :-(

FSIII calipers with 256mm disks. Comfort spec.

Any one know what's fitted.

Pretty sure that no UK Mk1 Fabias have wear indication.

Buy the ones with wear indicator if cheaper and just snip the wire off flush  :p

They shouldn't have a wear indicator, but when I did mine, I didn't know this. I bought the ones with the wear indicator for the extra quid or so, that way I had them if I needed them. Turned out it didn't have them, so I just cut the wiring off.

You can activate the instruments panel wear indicator warning light. I am not sure how you can retrofit the system though.

P32 of user manual , " thickness of brake pads " ( with symbol). If warning light (symbol) comes on, contact a Skoda dealer etc. Text will be displayed in the information display "CHECK BRAKE PADS".

But there's no models/spec  mentioned .But the text is shown in the area I would think is maxidot area( rectangle area under fuel/ temp)  gauges.

BUT, as I have mentioned on other occasions,  the bloke who helicoiled my front calliper said that this is the type of calliper he does often. So take it gently

I was led to understand that Fabias designed for variable servicing had these pad wear sensors. No Mk1 Vrs had them as they were all on Fixed servicing.

Did this as they were the same price at ECP for Pagid pads.

Many thanks.

Hmmm...Well that was easier said than done!

Both sides - calipers and carriers extremely corroded. So much so I had to spend time very gently chipping away with a small hammer and an old screwdriver to remove layers of rust like onion skins. The pads "ears" were welded to the carrier which looked more organic than machined metal!! Had to chip away rust then get file to reface the contact surfaces to something reasonably functional.  Lots of wire brushing, chipping and filing later both sides fitted and well covered in copper slip.

Sprayed copious amounts of penetrating oil over bleed nipples but nothing could persuade them to budge. Didn't want to be in position where nipple shears off rendering car undrivable for a week or more over Easter. A job for the garage I think.

All put together and did 20 or more hilly miles to bed them all in. Working nicely now. Just need to get fluid changed. Might even need to change calipers as by the corroded state of the outside and the wear of the whole system I wasn't sure how scored/corroded the piston wall were. As i had no rebuild kit to hand there was not point stripping further at this stage.

So about 2.5 hours instead of 1-1.5 (if I'm feeling fussy).

Oh well..

PS- snipped wear sensor wire off nice and short. Not needed.

A sheared off bleed nipple is a closed bleed nipple, isn't it? No less driveable-with than a whole one, unless I'm missing something.

Glad you got the job mostly done anyway,  might be easier to undo the stuck bleeders straight after a hard-braking drive, when all is nice and warm?
