Interesting Thing Happened On The Way To Work

Featured Replies

Well, I turned off the A33 as usual and accelerated but nothing happened but a rise in revs up to 4 gear....hmmmm........clutch slipping.

But........no burning smell......this first time this has happened....and it didn't happen again for the rest of my journey.

Wondering whether I hadn't released the clutch properly.......will do more testing on way home.

Also must say I don't doing "traffic lights" races or generally hammer it from standstill.

Any ideas?

Better than my morning!

Hit something unseen - blowout!

Pulled over, sprung into action, changed wheel in no time at all, all proud of myself to continue on our mission when I saw the rear - blown also!

Mission aborted, limped it back home (just round corner) and walked to train station.

:(

OUCH!!! Sounds expensive

Possibilities:

1. Clutch is knackered (but it'd slip more often)

2. Oil on clutch (but it'd make a burning smell)

3. Clutch cable or linkage binding somewhere leading to non-release of clutch (seems most likely. Get your dealer to look if it happens again) - Thought! you haven't been changing your headlamp bulbs have you, and left the headlamp cover ..... :p

Which ones.....Ian's tyres or (potentially ) my clutch?

Ian's tyres - your clutch might be perfectly OK. Stop whingeing !! :p

...car's in for service this Thursday so I'll ask them to check.....do you think this may be related to the slight lagginess I get sometimes? Just bouncing ideas.

You can PM me now......I cleared out mailbox.

Sticky release/thrust bearing?? LOL @ headlamp cover, Nick!!

Indeed Howard - or friction plate sticking on splines .... shouldn't happen in a nearly new car though - usually associated with something that's been left standing for ages. Usually prevents clutch from disengaging, not engaging, too ... hmmmmm

You are obviously very popular - it's full again ...!!

Slight weep of oil from crank seals picking up clutch plate dust?? Clutching at straws, I know! (This'll get as bad as Rob M's temp sensor) :D

Re: Ian's tyres.

Look on the bright side, at least you can put two new tyres on the...erm...front...erm...back...erm... Where exactly do you put new tyres on a 4x4

Old age me thinks. :D

Well I didi some testing and here's my findings:

no clutch slip but there is a slight judder iwhen moving off in 1st and when changing into 2nd. However this only happens if you move off quikcer than normal say using 2.5-3k rpm.

If you move off as normal using about 2k then there is no judder.

Can move off in 2nd gear and tried 5th and there was no slip.

May be the clutch just needs adjusting?

Car in for servicing so I'll get them to check it out.

Cheers.

Adrian.

Still points to bearing for me, but I've been wrong before (and I'm sure I'll be wrong again) :)

Let us know how you get on!

Rich: The fronts wear out faster, especially the front left, which is dragged around by ESP no doubt in understeer situations on roundabouts.

Thanks to "Team Briskoda" (you know who you are) I had a 2nd spare delivered last night and am back on the road again today so I can at least go to get new tyres!

Ah, the Briskoda spirit!

Right......now if it is the release/thrust bearings:

1) what would cause the problem

2) would I be able to get it done under warranty as my cars done

20k miles plus it's been remapped (dealer has siad warranty

would only be void on part changed).

On the wheels, same as you would with any other car :D :D

ba-doom tish!

:D

My semi-interesting thing that happend today was well errm, semi interesting:

was following a car that had a window sticker for Chorley FM (maybe Ian listens to it) anyway.. the tag line thing for it was "Coming in your ears" - which made me chuckle...

ill get me coat! :(

Chorley must be up Norf, then? :)

I saw a BMW yesterday (overtook it) and reg was.. actually I don't know if I can repeat it here...? - OK, I'll spell it differently. It was a 316i, and the reg was "316 KAK" - I had a good giggle to myself as I shot past. :D
