Wishbone bushing gone again?

Featured Replies

About a year ago, my front right wishbone sheered just next to where it goes into the console bush. I bought replacement parts from Andrew Page and paid a garage to fit them.

Today, I experienced some all-too-familiar symptoms that I didn't like. The steering wheel jolting to the left when I brake, accomopanied by a 'clunk', the weird steering etc. Had a brief look when I parked up at my destination and I can't tell for certain but it looks like the rubber inside of the bush has deteriorated on that same side again.

Clearly something isn't right. I'm thinking something further up the steering chain is the problem, and I'd quite like to get the whole lot rectified this time to prevent annual recurrances.

Does anyone know what could have caused this?

Cheers!

What type of bushes were they?

Go for some polybushes and be done with it.

So they fitted a new wishbone in a old bush?

Or they fitted a new bush with the wishbone?

As above though,if it was a voided standard bush you really should have fitted a solid one,as the voided ones are rubbish.

The garage fitting should have also recommended this if they have anything about them :)

I bought a new wishbone and bushing from Andrew Page intending to do the job myself - not realising that it's not a task for a noob!
I basically told the AP guy my reg no. and he located the parts for me. Time ran out whilst I was trying to sort the brakes at the same time so basically had to drive my broken car to the garage at 15mph and get them to fit the parts about a week before I was due to move out of my house - so there wasn't time to discuss whether the parts were good. My fault really; I just assumed that whatever Page supplied would be fine. Still surprised that it's died in a year though.

Can you get a photo of the bush that you think has died? Or maybe you remember, is it the type with just two webs of rubber, one up and one down from the centre of the wishbone peg?

There is every chance the garage didn't fit the new bush, just replaced the damaged wishbone.

Wouldn't be the first time a garage doesn't do what they are asked as they think they know better.......

You would have to hope that the garage in question has not charged you for labour on parts that they have not fitted, then kept the bush to possibly fit on someone else's and charge them as well for a part you supplied.

I would say though it was either a cheap pattern part or incorrectly fitted.
