Antivirus?

Featured Replies

Can you enlighten me on what it does, should I continue with it?

I had Avast a few years ago but couldn't get on with it. Am I right in thinking that's the one that used to talk to you with annoying announcements?

It's a few years since I had to use it, it's supposed to provide an extra layer of authentication I think. But I mainly found it didn't work when it was supposed to and tried to when it wasn't supposed to.

I use kaspersky which is free for 3 computers if you have a Barclays account with on line banking. I can't comment if it's any good as I'm no expert but I guess it's better than nothing at all and as

That has answered my question as I bank with NW. I will not bother with it now. .

Does Windows Defender have 'real time protection'????????????????????

Originally thought MSE didn't have this, but then learnt that it did, IIRC?

Avast has never spoken to me :s

AVG blocked windows defender, not it's uninstalled defender is doing a job. How secure only time will tell?

Would never pay for a/v software when the free options are as efficient as they are (and don't cripple the pc like, for instance, Norton does)

Have used Avast, AVG and am now using Avira.. all to good effect. AVG can be a reet pain to uninstall and I get random bottom right pop-ups from Avira trying to get me to go pro.

Plus Windows firewall and I run Malwarebytes (free) when I remember. Job's a good'n

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Perhaps it doesn't like you, Lol. (only kiddin).

It did used to speak when I used it the first time around a number of years ago. Used to scare the crap out of me.

You thinking of "Avast virus database has been updated" ?

There was iirc a "threat detected" one

Never had a threat detected in 15yrs :)

Well that didn't last long, now uninstalled, slowed things up. Things now much quicker.

Will try Avast.

Free AV is always going to nag you. Coz it's free, they want their money somehow.

Doesn't necessarily mean you do not have something lurking in the background.

I was using MSE and Avast found something.

When using Avast, Eset then found something else.

And previously Norton didn't detect something that (Malwarebytes iirc) found.

I have always had the Windows Firewall turned on, except with Nortons own.

Nothing has ever happened to my accounts or any information used, except for my Email account being hacked, probably more due to a weak password at the time.

It was only the odd one and each time sorted very quickly.

I jumped off the sofa with machete in hand when I heard that the first time. :D ........................................Alright, not really.

Should never just rely on one tool... always use AV, firewall, anti-spam and anti-spyware as well as sensible use practice

Norton - the greatest consumer of of available system resources .. i reckon an infection riddled laptop would run better than the same model with nirton on it  mcafee hasnt featured at all in this thread? i wonder why....

Didn't want to be the first to say it.

My sister pays for mcafee and it pops up more messages in a week than my avira free does. Uses loads more resources too.

Our work systems are running it too.

i do remember a time (a long time ago) when it was considered good on a home user front. Then it turned to crap, norton took the lead, and now they are both just bloated piles of crap trying to make themselves look better than they are..

Avast has never spoken to me :S

Another vote for Avast, me hearties. But as I run 3 OS, and it runs OK on each on same version  ,I like it, although I only go on line with one OS.

Was the case many years ago, but I find Norton has very little impact - even on the in-laws older machine and a little Web book.

I trialled Mcafee last year when my Norton was almost up and it brought my machine to a crawl.

Oddly I don't have issues with my free McAfee, never pops up doesn't seem to affect performance at all unless it's running a scan.

Would I pay for it?

No. I'd get ESET.

Also to clarify what Osborn has written, he's right to say you shouldn't rely on only one thing BUT you can't have more than one antivirus on a computer. Malwarebytes and antispam aren't antivirus.

If you have two or more AV on one machine they start to look at each other as viruses and fight.

If you've a home server it can be a good idea to run a different AV on that than the desktop machines. That means that if there is a vulnerability in one hopefully the other will be unaffected.

If you want security, pay up and stop worrying.

ESET and Malwarebytes have my money.  I don't hear from either unless it's important.

JMO

Slightly relevant, Ebuyer has McAfee total protection 2016 unlimited devices on offer at £20, saving £47. I still wouldn't have it though, ESET still for me.

Have had Norton ,not impressed ,had mcafee, very unimpressed as it slowed the computer and laptop too much.now had kapersky the last 4 years ,brilliant ,and you can even contact them over the phone, but they do sponsor Ferrari but don't hold that against them.

I've a Sophos UTM Home running and that comes with free Sophos  anti-virus licences.
