2.0pd 4x4 droning vibration at 2300rpm in 6th

Featured Replies

Drove the octy on the motorway for the first time in a couple of months this week.

Loaded up coming back from holiday with cases etc. And noted a droning under acceleration from the back at about 2300 rpm so 70 to 75ish in 6th. Gone when lifting off and hard to tell if it was there at the same revs in 5th... Possibly but quieter.

Is this likely to be the rear propshaft rubber coupling that I've seen reference to and any idea if this can be replaced without a whole new prop shaft?

Car is a 2007 2.0 TDI PD that has had a visit to shark and done about 68k miles iirc

I had a duff cv joint at the front which made a whole range of funny noises.

Also knackered wheel alignment caused noises too.

I struggle to tell direction of sounds though, being somewhat deaf.

Resurrecting this thread as drove the Octavia on the motorway for the first time in ages today and the vibration is really bad.

2000 to 2500rpm under load in 5th and 6th.  Goes when clutch dipped and revs held steady and doesn't seem to be there at same revs when not under load and all OK at tickover and other revs so thinking its not dmf or diff related but could be engine mounts or prop coupling?  Front left wheel bearing done a while ago and rest checked out OK at that time.

Any thoughts or recommendations?

Car is currently on 94k miles and recently serviced and an engine scan suggests all is OK.

Is the drone steady or does it seem to pulse?

Steady and no pulsing.  All tyres OK and checked with no sawtoothing (cross climates).

Doesn't seem to vary in tone with vehicle speed.  Louder under load and acceleration.  Sounds like its from the back.  Doesnt vary when cornering.  All fine at low speeds.  Sems to have got worse over winter which is why I'm wondering if its prop coupling as it was used in bad weather and snow so the haldex would have been working and drive going to the back potentially worsening any prop coupling failure????

Spoke to specialist today and it's booked in for looking at on Thursday.  Sounds like they've done a few A3s before with the same issue and think it could be propagated / doughnut related.

Bugger - got the 'report' back from the garage...   the main issues seem to be...

Propshaft doughnuts on the way out

lower engine / gearbox mount bushes heavily worn and breaking up

NSF spring broken

So the question now seems to be bite the bullet and get it repaired or trade it for something newer?
