Hi, my 2012 Octavia Estate has always had a really soft rear suspension, and I've had enough of my car bottoming out.

 

Do any members have personal experience of uprated rear springs, Mad inner springs or airbag assisters?

Hi, you could try fitting  Skoda Rough Road suspension. Fitted as standard to my 2010 ex Police Octavia Estate, She rides well, . You would have to have your steering/suspension.geometry adjusted afterward.

Don't have mad but have fitted grayston spring assistors to my 4x4 and they work a treat with a fully loaded boot and 4 bikes on a towbar carrier

I have a 07 plate estate, when I got it the rear suspension was very soft, fitting a towbar caused lots of bottoming out, the towbar was hitting speed bumps,

I fitted a pair of monroe heavy duty springs, now the suspension sits about 10mm higher than stock and is much firmer, great for towing, also very easy to fit but you do need a trolley jack to raise and lower the suspension arm.

Hi,

I'm very confused as to which springs to buy to solve my low ground clearance.  There seem to be so many options (53 on auto doc) with several oem numbers quoted, e.g. 1K0 511 115 BF or ending EB, BS, BE, DF, BM.  Also when I checked compatibility of Monroe SP3349, it said not compatible with my Octavia hatchback1.9tdi 2006, but if they're for the estate version they maybe ideal to solve the issue.

Looking at some of the options, they vary in weight (600 to 2700 gm), length (330 to 371mm), thickness, etc.

Can anyone help clarify my conundrum?

If the original rear springs are still fitted, you can look at the coloured dots on the rear springs to determine the OEM part number.

 

As you can see from the chart above 1 white dot and 2 yellow dots means that it's OEM part number 1K0511115BE, and 1 white dot and 3 yellow dots means that it's OEM part number 1K0511115BF.

 

You can also find out what rear springs the car left the factory with from the car's build codes. If the car left the factory with build codes 1JA and 0YC, that means the car had rear springs with OEM part number 1K0511115BE.

Extra Hard

I've labelled them soft, medium, hard, and extra hard so you can see the hierarchy.

 

Soft and medium was used on the hatchback versions of the Octavia MK2, and hard and extra hard was used on the estate versions of the Octavia MK2.

 

I suggestion you use the hard one from the estate. The extra hard was used on the estate when fitted with a factory towbar. The extra hard will compromise the car's ride quality unless you are carrying a lot of weight in the back, so only use it if you really need to, ie. regularly carrying 5 people, all their lugguage, and towing a caravan at the same time.

 

Sachs are available to match all four of the above rear springs, but I've only shown an ebay link to the hard version.

 

I've compared photos of the hard and extra hard versions, and the only difference is in the number of coil turns...the hard uses 8 coil turns and the extra hard uses 7.5 coil turns (less coil turns when all other things are equal makes the spring harder).

KYB list these KYB RH6788 standard ride height rear springs for the Octavia MK2 Estate. They are available on ebay for £33.22 for two, ie. £16.61 each. Looking at one of the photos, it shows they have 8 coil turns so should give the same ride comfort as the 1K0511115BF springs. However, at 361mm length they are about 7mm longer than the 1K0511115BF springs, so you shouldn't have any problems with sagging. You can also see the specification on the KYB online catalogue, which I've linked to below.

Some of the OEM part numbers that you mentioned in your first post, such as 1K0511115BM or ending BS DF EB are from cars such as VW Touran 7-seater, Skoda Superb MK2 4x4, VW Golf GTI with sports suspension, Skoda Octavia MK2 VRS with sports suspension...so they are either too stiff, too long, or too short for the Octavia MK2 with standard suspension. You can use the online catalogue on gknautomotive.com to confirm this. Just type in the OEM part number of the spring, and it will show you the specification of the spring and what cars it fits, if gknautomotive.com makes that spring. You can also use autodoc to get similar information on springs.

I used the extra hard (rough road package) springs on my Octavia Estate, the ride and handling were not compromised but the rear sat a lot higher and put the towball well above the regulation height range. I was not concerned by the aesthetics but the person who I sold to was despite buying it specifically for towing. For me I could put a proper load in the back without it dragging its ar5e like a dog with worms!

 

The new springs that I fitted to the Yeti were exactly the same part number & suffix.

The 1K0511115BD, 1K0511115BE, 1K0511115BF, 1K0511115BG springs that I mentioned above are standard ride height springs, not +15mm increased ride height (or off-road package), so wouldn't raise the towball above regulation height. The 1JA build code shown against the OEM part number indicates that it's a standard ride height spring.

Notice that each of these four OEM part numbers are matched against two different build codes, depending on when the car was built. This shows that Skoda started fitting rear springs two weight ranges lower from 06.03.2006, and is probably the reason so many have since complained about sagging rear ends.

 

For example, if your Octavia MK2 had build codes 1JA+0YD and was built before 06.03.2006 it would have 1K0511115BF rear springs, but if it was built after it would have 1K0511115BD rear springs. I suspect BlueTigger's car was built after 06.03.2006 and so came out of the factory with the softer rear springs...hence the sagging rear end.

I still have one of the boxes to hand (one old Yeti spring not broken or sagging), the Lesjofors part number is 4295088.

 

Knowing that you are the guru on these things Carlston, what would you say the ride height of that should be compared to a standard on a 2006 Octavia TDi estate and also a 2015 2.0 TDi 4x4 Yeti Outdoor ?

 

The Octavia was seriously jacked up, more than 15mm, the Yeti looks OK but its a Tonka Toy anyway!

Lesjofors 4295088 is identical to Kilen 65075 (made in the same factory in Sweden) is sold to replace the following OEM part numbers

1K0511115DJ

1K0511115DK

 

These springs are longer and heavier duty than +15mm springs, and hence are only normally fitted to Scout models. You can tell immediately by looking at the weight (2.4kg to 2.8kg) that these are far heavier than even +15mm springs.

 

Notice below, that these three OEM part numbers cover 3 weight ranges, ie. 0YG, 0YH, and 0YJ. Therefore Lesjofors 4295088 and Kilen 65075 is a one size fits all approach...or at least one spring is sold to replace three different springs. However, Lesjofors 4295129 and Kilen 65118 is sold to replace just 5Q0511115AL from the Octavia MK3 Scout, which is the same as 1K0511115CR from the Octavia MK2 Scout.

Thanks, I had forgotten about the Scout, they were exactly what I wanted so I was very pleased with them & the towball height only a minor inconvenience, 3 of my trailers have articulated drawbars so can be set to any height, I put a spacer on the coupling of my goods trailer, my 4 wheeled car trailer will be a problem but its been locked away for 15 years with the Elan on it and wont be going anywhere.

 

I would imagine if a Scout owner fitted a standard aftermarket towbar they would have the same height issue. The Yeti towball is also too high but thats fine for the goods trailer now!

Thanks for all the assistance.  I have had the springs and shocks changed and the height is now at least an inch higher. Hopefully this will solve the grounding issue.

I have read the above thread, but I am struggling to keep track of all the numbers and options.

I have a 2006, 1.9tdi estate. It's sagging at the rear for towing and would love to know the exact parts i can buy for a strong and high rear with the rough road equivalent. Do i need to change shocks and springs if so for which ones from where?

I have found the stiffer springs mentioned above, but the extra height would be amazing.

Any help would be amazing.

Assuming it's Octavia MK2 1.9TDI estate FWD (Front Wheel Drive) and not 4x4, gknautomotive lists 1K0511115BF rear springs for the standard ride height car without towbar and 1K0511115BG rear springs for the standard ride height car with towbar.

For most owners, it's better to have standard ride height rather than increased ride height.

Increased ride height increases the car's centre of gravity which adversely affects handling and stability. Most aftermarket shock absorbers are aimed at standard ride height, so that's another good reason to have standard ride height.
