2011 vRS running rough... again.

Featured Replies

Hi all. 2011 Fabia vRS. 31680 miles. Recently serviced 1 week ago. Plugs, all filters, correct spec oil etc.

Had the dsg oil & update done in March 2015. Hasn't been back to Skoda since. I have asked about any recent ECU updates & they've said they can't tell me unless it goes for a service there.

Problems - The car under light throttle at around 2000 - 3000 rpm runs quite rough. This is causing the dsg to play up aswell in D mode. Jerk changes etc. If I accelerate quite hard it pulls through it all with out a glitch.

When the car was serviced 1 week ago the plug in cylinder 3 was burnt out after 9600 miles. Previously had a fault code back in September last year (can't remember which) and went straight to skoda who couldn't get a code from the car during a scan. They put it down to a loose vacuum hose which I've had a look for again and can't see anything untoward.

The annoying thing is, it's intermittent. One day it's running crap, or like yesterday it was fine.

I'm covered by warranty wise warranty but wanted to come here for advice first before cracking on hoping it might be something and nothing.

Thanks.

Karl.

EDIT - Car was serviced by a mechanic I trust with all cars I've had and kept all the parts to show they had been changed.

Karl are you using 98 Ron or above ? How is the car driven spirited now and again or just tootling around town. Short journeys can cause the plugs to soot up as goneoffski says a redline a day keeps the miss fires away, hope you get sorted buddy

Always run 99 ron fuel. It's driven quite spirited every now & again.

No epc or eml lights popping up or staying on. Really flummoxed me this.

What spark plugs went in and with what gap?

It sounds like some mistake made by your trusted mechanic.

I would get the pipework checked.

The Turbo Pipe & seal he removed to get space and the pipe work at the drivers side.

There are recent Software Updates for a CAVE engine,

a Independent VW Specialist with Licensed Equipment can do that for you.

Maybe once you have it running right it is worth Remapping to Stage 1 and have it running even better.

(That would void your Aftermarket Warranty though.)

PS

You have an ongoing issue if Cylinder 3 Spark Plug was gubbed after only 9,600 miles.

?

What plugs were they that came out, NGK, and who put them in 9,600 miles ago?

Was a Software Update done when the Spark Plugs were changed that time?

?

Has your car ever had the Breather Pipe / Valve Update and a Software Update done by Skoda.

*They should have done a Engine ECU Update if available when they had the car in for the DSG Service Campaign and the did a Software Update for the DSG as well as the oil change.* (DSG Sofrware Update With the Car not using its own battery, external powered.)

It was running like this before it was serviced too I should mention. Initially I thought it was just the plugs needing a change.

Unsure on the plugs and gap that went in. He mentioned they were platinum plugs.

I've checked vacuum pipes & can't see any loose. Could one be split possibly?

I've contemplated remapping it but with the engine I Dare not do it...

Previous to the service I had NGK BKR7IEX in. Hasn't had any recent ECU updates since the Gearbox was done back in March last year.

Quite common to split a pipe, but usually it is the seal that is wrong,

a small O Ring, or the Turbo Pipe seal.

Best get the Spark Plug Numbers that you paid for, and ask the Technician / Mechanic what he checked the gap was at.

I'll have another good look round and possibly drive it up to the mechanic to have a look.

??

Has it ever had a Software Update since 2011 at any Skoda Service when it was on the Diagnostics?

It's had one ECU update back in March 2015 I belive when it had the DSG done and that's it. I've no papers about any ECU updates from Skoda since.

The Service Campaign on the DSG and the Software Update to the DSG, done using External Power when done correctly,

is not the same as a Software Unpdate for the 1.4 TSI Twincharger ECU.

So if in doubt always ask a Skoda Master Technician if a Software Update was done as a Service when they are doing a diagnostic on the car.

Thanks George. Should keep me busy for a bit. Any updates and or resolved problems I'll update here for other members.

Had a quick look under the bonnet.. all pipes seemed to be fine. Had my dad look also for second opinion.

Can someone identify this pipe for me at all as it wasn't pushed all the way on.. .d8374568f98ed5d25b673e1695c1cc73.jpg

Just driven the car about 5 miles and not a jump or glitch at all. Could be nothing to do with rough running but the first 5 miles seemed promising.

Thanks.

Karl.

Great news Karl - i hope that's all it was.

We can do a quick VCDS scan and see what's there if any.

See you tonight for a catch-up buddy!

Hopefully that's all it was. Done another trip over to my mums today & it was fine.

Would appreciate it if you have time mate yes!

Will do, 6-630pm OK?

Hopefully the vacuum pipe back on properly sorts things.

Maybe time to replace the fitted for life 'Fuel Filter'.

As to fault codes, 'Misfires' will not show / save unless there are enough is a cycle.

I was told by Skoda a few months back that the filter was for life... I couldn't quite believe it so got my Mechanic to change it anyway. After 31000 miles I guess it would of needed it anyway!

Perfect mate - worth a scan anyway to see whats logged or not.

See you after 6pm...

Thanks to Stephen (Samuir1974 for running VCDS on the Fabia.

Logged two codes on the 4th of April when it was running like utter $hit!

P0106 - MAP/Barometric Pressure Circuit Range/Performance Problem

I had this fault code before when Skoda themselves found a loose vacuum hose. Turns out it seems that, that is the case again. Fault codes cleared & will run another scan in due course to double check.

Again, thanks to Stephen & also George above for where to look & advice.

Hope this helps other Fabia vRS owners too. Car is running sweet and putting a smile back on my face.

Karl.

It rather sounds as if your problems may have stemmed from your "trusted mechanic" failing correctly to refit a pipe.

More of an issue is the preoccupation with 98 RON fuel (seemingly unavailable in the UK) or above (i.e. 99 RON) and "spirited driving".

The vRS is designed to run on fuel from 95 RON (widely available) up to 98 RON. Running it on 102 RON may do it no harm, running it on 97 RON certainly will not.

Short runs down to the shops will not allow the engine to get up to a temperature that will clean the plugs; this will not change as a result of premature ejaculation (spirited) driving which is only going to increase wear and tear on the transmission and tyres

Superstitious old wives with a severe case of OCD are alive and well ;)

Welcome back to give us your knowledge and experience on owning and running and maintaining a Fabia vRS.

?

Have you bought, owned or run one yet, or bought fuel for one?

?

Why do Volkswagen advise using Super 98 for the VW R & GTI.

& why do Skoda put '98 Super (95)' on the filler cap lid of a 1.4 TSI / TFSI 132-136 kW Twincharger.?

http://volkswagen.co.uk/need-help/owners/Fuel

98-100 ron widely available on Mainland Europe where the VWG cars are built that are sold in the Home Market with the engineers having the engines and maps built with the knowledge that emissions can be lower on the higher octane, and the engines running more efficiently,

and and 102 ron is not as expensive as in the UK & available around Mainland Europe.

The Volkswagen Built Engine is built on Mainland Europe and the Owners Manuals are written there.

Some translation issues at times, and VW are not in control of the Fuel Octanes available in the UK,

they are aware of them though.

If you can get hold of 98/99RON fuel I can't see why you wouldn't use it in a car of the vRS' caliber.

I've driven through petrol stations before that don't offer super unleaded fuel because I don't want to run 95RON.
