Vibration on idling when engine warm

Featured Replies

Hi all

When my engine is warm and I'm sat waiting at lights etc I feel the car/engine vibrating through my seat. Doesn't happen when the engine is cold, needle stays steady at 800, handbrake on and in neutral. If I raise the revs slightly it goes, but comes back when they drop back to 800

Any ideas ? (Petrol vRS)

Exactly the same as me mate and I've been tackling it for a year. Various suggestions have been pcv, intake manifold, carbon buildup, dmf...

So far I haven't fixed it but I've ordered a new intake manifold from the US, and I've checked my pcv and it's fine. My engine mounts look fine and the engine doesn't move much if I try to rock it by hand. I haven't checked my dmf as honestly, I don't know how to.

Does your vibration feel like a twitch; as if someone is kicking you in the seat? I can see the engine subtly twitching in the same fashion, and like you, it's mostly noticeable when idling warm, but with perfect 800rpm and no fluctuations.

If you can, get the car checked for codes via vcds; I'd be very surprised if you didn't have some intermittent p02015 errors.

Yeah, I can feel I in my backside but also all up my back too. The car is booked in on Friday at a VAg specialist to sort the rear brakes (abs sensor/ring issue) so will mention it to them, they'll be doing a scan anyway for the brake fault

*edit* not had the bonnet up with engine running yet, shall do tomorrow when engine warm when get back from work, do recall engine moving a fair bit when started (when giving it the once over when viewing to buy it)

I had the same. Changed some bits but turned out to be an insert in the lower engine mount which I took out and it was fine after. If you don't have the insert is be looking at a failure somewhere in the lower engine mount.

Ah hoping it could be a mounting point wear issue, cheaper to fix than mechanical!

How many miles on the car? Keep at them as I've never been able to get any mechanic to get what I'm on about with this fault. Keep in touch mate because i've got a new intake manifold on order so I'll be fitting that and removing carbon buildup from the intake ports. Another thing to consider is coil packs. I replaced my plugs and it made no difference, bit others have suggested coil packs as a possible culprit, however £100+ for four I'm reluctant to buy them on a hunch.

It's just coming up to 89k. Will do!

Is this the round Bush on the bottom in the middle with an 8.8 bolt (about 19mm?) if so the rubber on mine looks a bit poor so could explain some things...

Underneath the car it's comprised of three parts each of which could have failed. The two large round bushes or the torque arm that fits into them. Assuming of course that this is the issue.

New to the forum and my car has the whole shaking issue. Did have the p2015 code but now gone .the garage I brought the car from said they replaced the internal flap of the intake manifold! Not sure if that's even possible? Did you ever resolve the problems

It's not, assuming you car is TSI anyway.  It requires a whole new manifold, which I recently did.  The car is smoother, but the idle twitch/shaking is still there for me and hasn't changed at all.  I suspect it's engine mount or DMF/clutch related, but I can't really afford to just go and replace them on a hunch.  I can live with it for now, and the DMF is showing no other signs of ageing/failure.  I'm having the car into the local VAG specialist soon to have new shock mounts fitted so I'll ask them to look.  They'll probably charge me another £60 "diagnostic fee" though which seems a bit of a rip off, but hey ho.

Same car as you, same issue. No fault codes and nothing obvious so I live with it.

Mine only does it in park or neutral- in drive it's fine.

I figure for a car worth about 2k it's not worth chasing minor faults although it is irritating!

@SussexTrekmyn had been messed with the revs had been set at -60 below normal had it plugged in took them seconds to find problem was suppost be £45 but didn't charge me as was fast fix, maybe worth a try at a specialist near you?
