Towbar - Universal Electric wiring kit

Featured Replies

So I just got a towbar from a '07 Octavia, but the wiring is missing some parts. Can I just go with the Universal Wiring Kit (like this one: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/180937735265?ru=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fsch%2Fi.html%3F_from%3DR40%26_sacat%3D0%26_nkw%3D180937735265%26_rdc%3D1 ) or do I need the OEM wiring kit that costs about £100 more. I won't be towing any big trailers so I basicly I only need the lights to work.

Another thing, I have no idea if my '10 Octavia Estate 1.9l 4x4 has CANBUS in it, but I was told that if it did, then this universal kit would not work??

Yup, later found out that it was only for cars up to 2008, was told by the dealer that I wasn't able to use it.

So my main question is, can I still use the universal kit even though I have a car with a CANBUS?

Thats the part in your picture with the 7 pin socket ?

The reason for the dealer comment is that later cars use the same bulb for tail lights and brake lights. They just change the average voltage supplied for each function. So for your 2010 car you don't have a place to connect the individual tail and brake wires of the kit to. However you have both available on your 2007 car so the universal kit will work. Its like having Can-bus on the older car and "Super" Can-bus on the newer car.

A quick google for TEB7AS brings back an installation PDF detailing exactly what to do when brake or fog lights are also used for tail lights: http://www.towbarsdirect.co.uk/images/M7-WK7.pdf

As mentioned in the OP's other topic, the genuine module will probably work just fine and avoiding hacking the wiring to fit a bypass relay.
