Parking Brake not staying engaged when in neutral

Featured Replies

Just wondering if anyone else has had this....

Couple of times now since I've had the car (1st Feb 2016) I've had the situation where I am at a stop, engage parking brake, put gear in neutral (manual box) and release clutch to activate start-stop...and the parking brake disengages!  First time was in the office car park and I rolled into a kerb, second was this evening at a set of lights on my way home; I rolled backwards briefly before I realised and hit the foot brake and fortunately there was no-one behind me.  Tried it again when I got home at the end of my journey and it carried on disengaging, even after turning the engine off, taking out the key and starting up again.

Generally I'm more than happy with the parking brake and love that I can drive off and it turns off, but surely in neutral it shouldn't release when I lift the clutch.  As I say, this has only happened a couple of times in just over 2 months, but that's too many times in my book, as I don't want to roll into someone!  Normally it's fine, but it's making me a bit twitchy over relying on the brake staying on, and I don't like leaving my foot on the brake in case I cause the discs to warp.

Anyone else had this, or got any suggestions?

FWIW the fault was still there this morning before I left the house, but after a couple of short trips around town it was back to normal operation.

That's a strange one

Indeed it is.  Car will be due its first service in a couple of months so will mention it then...

Mine engages when I expect it to, not experienced what you describe.

Well, I've found a work around for now at least.  Discovered I have 'Auto Hold' (amazing what happens when you RTFM!), so no rolling backwards, in fact no need to touch the parking brake lever at all now!  This car is amazing and keeps getting better!

Yeah.. if you have the button pressed next to the gear lever .. the car should apply the brakes as required..

are you saying you had this switched off ? if so im not surprised you were not happy!

Yeah - was off by default when I picked the car up, and hadn't got round to investigating what it did yet...

Who knows what else there is lurking!  Trying to get Bluetooth audio playback to work a bit better, but suspect I'm limited by only having a Swing radio.

I've been having a problem with the parking brake not releasing. I called Skoda Assistance yesterday and the technician who came out had no experience of the new system and insisted that we were using it wrongly and had to manually set and release the parking brake with the switch on centre console. It actually works just the same as the autohold and releases as the clutch starts to bite, and engages when the key is removed from ignition. When the intermittent fault occurs it needs about 2- 8 attempts to move off before it clears. Wondering if anyone else has had this problem. Next stop back to dealers. Otherwise its a great car.

Sounds like you've got the reverse of my issue - mine releases as soon as the clutch comes up, but it was doing so when in neutral which it shouldn't.  Booked for first service on 1st June and have reported the matter for them to look into.

Sometimes too much technology isn't a good idea...!
