Amazon Music / Spotify / Tune in Radio - Data usage calculations

As i have finally got Android Auto working again... I have been doing some calculations for data usage..

I have based the cals on the higher 320kbps (Amazon average is 256kbps) as a worst case example

So - streaming at 320kbps is 0.0390mb per sec or 140mb per hour or approx 850mb per 6 hours of streamed music.

Google maps.... Google Maps has a feature to download maps to the phone, so you can download a map of an area to the phone ahead of time using WiFI (but each map is around 175mb - ir to cover the City of York) or on the fly from research it may use around 15mb per 4 hour trip if you set the route and follow it... rather than zooming in on the maps etc. (which all require data.)  But then need to factor in traffic monitoring.

Based on this, most mobile phone plans don't have unlimited data, data only sims are around £20 a month for unlimited usage.

What sort of usage are the rest of you getting ?

Im thinking continue the use of the 64gb SD card and onboard sat nav is the simple option !

Thanks

Spotify, Google Play et al allow for offline storage for those on limited data plans.

I stream from Google Play and TuneIn Radio and use Waze all the time, and I have used 218MB so far this month. I have 10GB of data per month on my plan (because I have EE broadband as well as a mobile) and I never use anywhere near that amount.

Not many things are cheaper here up north but mobile usage is one of those. Most people have unlimited data packages and they are very cheap. Hence no need to calculate data. And soon we get rid of the ridiculous roaming prices within EU which is so great when travelling. But that might not concern you guys in UK if you decide to resign from the rest of the Europe....

I never use my whole data allowance up (5gb I think) but I don't use Spotify or Waze and mainly utilise offline storage. I'm old fashioned though...

At present i use around 2gb of data of month, and that is before using any of these audio streaming sites.... hence the question really as adding data packs are expensive on Vodafone and even more if you go over your bundle limit @ £6 for 250mb

If you are looking to use these apps on a regular basis, it may be worth looking into increasing your data limit, or if near to the end of contract, changing over to an airtime provider with better data plans.

People tend to stick to within their data plans which will determine their usage; if they had a bigger data plan they may use various apps more; online navigation, music/video streaming etcetera.

I have unlimited mobile data and unlimited home broadband (wifi) and my average monthly usage is 45Gb, with an average mobile data usage of 5Gb.

My usage pattern will change from next month when my mobile data will increase to around 15Gb and my home wifi will decrease to around 15-20Gb.

The bottom line is, due to having unlimited mobile data I don't have to think about can I use it, or do I have enough data left without incurring an extra charge, I just use it.

Yeah this is the thing.. i'm stuck with Vodafone as this is the only provider which works at home indoors, (plus i have a sure signal box to top that signal up too from my work corporate contract to ensure i always have signal.

Im currently on a Vodafone test drive so have unlimited data but only till the middle of this month. I am going to contract them to see how much it costs for unlimited data.

Does the SIII media have a capability to accept its own SIM? 3 do quite good deals on SIM only unlimited data plans, that way you can keep your Vodafone contract.

Another alternative with 3 is their mifi (wifi) device which you can take anywhere. I have a rather sneaky 15Gb for £8.50 (not even the 3 shop staff understand how I get that price,) mifi plan. The latest mifi is 4G compatible and I believe you can use that data in certain countries at no extra charge, though I'd check that last part.**

I have a Tesco 1GB/month limit on the in car SIM. You need the WiFi option installed in the car though. Supports 2/2.5/3 & 4G.

Think that should be "majority" of Europe !
