Dash Cam?

Featured Replies

Hi all. I am about to have my new Yeti delivered. Thought I would invest in a Dash Cam. Would prefer a duel camera? All experiences, options greatly appreciated.  Thanks Chris

Look at on 'Halfords'  'Nextbase' Which and Auto Express recommend them, I have one fitted, very good indeed.

Chilly.

You'll be forking out a bit of dosh if you want both front and rear, I got a Koonlung K1S at a cost of I think £250, there's a cheaper alternative probably, which is by 2 cameras, although you'd need to power both, where as a dual camera you'd only need to power one I think, at least that's the case with the Koonlung

Transcend do an excellent range of cameras starting at approx £75 each. I have the DrivePro 200 attached to the rear screen and I cannot fault it.

Has anybody experience of Halfords fitting service, as note that they only charge £30 for an install, which then gets away from the trailing leads.

The Koonlung (aka Innovv K1) is on my shortlist... how is it? Where have you locate the control unit? Have you hidden the cables to the cameras? As the cables carry power and video they appear to be thicker than the usual power-only supplies to stand-alone cameras.

The other option I am mulling is two Möbius cameras.

In either case I would fit a permanent feed(s) and hide the cabling.

It's alright, I wouldn't say amazing but it is good, one pitfall I've thought of since posting yesterday is the rear camera cable length is pretty short, I couldn't get it to go from the back of the car to the front, I had to run the cable under the passenger seat and even then it was stretch and that was in a Citigo! Also the GPS cable is short as well, I haven't been able to fully hide that due to the cable length being to short. That and you need to format the memory card everything month, otherwise the camera will have a tendency to freeze, where I located the main hub is just next to me under the handbrake, I'll post some photos so you get an idea of how it's all hidden

Don't bother with Blackvue, they're RUBBISH.

Im not happy with mine ONE BIT and although its all connected up I never bother powering it up.....................as soon as I can afford it it will be ripped out and taken down to the local tip and a better  system installed.

When I got my Yeti I also bought a new dashcam (Nextbase 402-G) at the same time. I asked the dealer if they would fit it for me (accepting that there would be a charge of course) but they said that as it wasn't an OEM item they would not do it. I agree with a post I've seen somewhere saying this ought to be a factory option.

As it happens, the camera comes with plenty of cable for routing round the edges of panels, carpets etc and it is very easy to install in this basic way.  The only thing I don't like and have never resolved is the fact that the socket in my Yeti is always live. I know there are plenty of posts on here where people have sorted this out - I've just been lazy!

The camera itself works flawlessly and thank goodness so far hasn't been needed for anything. It does record the speed of the vehicle as measured by GPS and it always surprises me when I see the difference between the two readings. I'm no angel but I do stick to the speed limits (mostly) and if the car says I'm doing 30 it's usually around 26/27.

If I were going to make any criticism of the camera it would be that the onboard battery gives too little time before running out, a couple of minutes at the most so I find that it has to be powered externally one way or another if you are setting it up.

Take a look at dashcamtalk site and forum, plenty of advice on there.

Mind that if you have a dual channel (two cams) that if the 2nd cam is integral to the main unit, it will only capture the inside of the car, unlikley to get much out the rear window as the exposure levels differ so much. Your best bet is a dual cam set up with remote cam. But you then need to run a wire from front to back so you may be better off with two seperate cams.

That's a very reasonable price given the hardware kit could be half that.

That's a very helpful review, never used it but saying it's rubbish!

You don't have to go to the tip, just put in the dustbin, it'll find it's own way there.

It may have been helpful if you said what model you have and why you think it's rubbish.

My mobius's are almost 3 years on the go and been taken from car to car since I got them (5 cars) and I currently swap them between the Octavia and Fabia depending on which I am in. They have recorded a good 120K miles worth and still on same micro SD cards. No failures to date in any way! Still great quality footage for the price point. £49 now though, not the £37 when I got mine :(

I'll second that, very useful site.

Also, the comments left there by owners of each camera are a useful source of information.

Timely discussion this; after about 3 years my cheapy dual-camera system has given up the ghost, so am looking for a replacement.

Can't moan really, it cost me less than £40 and has captured some very interesting footage over those 3 years (one of these: http://www.techmoan.com/blog/2012/9/18/a-car-dvr-with-a-wired-rear-camera.html )

I too was looking at the Koonlung K1S.

Not cheap, but it has two separate cameras (a must-have for me), and I like the fact the lenses are very small & discreet and the main "box" where the SD card is can be hidden away.

Can you use the K1S without GPS ?

Don't bother with Blackvue, they're RUBBISH.

I have used it, and the rear camera 'blew' twice and had to be replaced, and I found Blackvue VERY UNHELPFUL with customer services and technical support.

I have also paid for the Powermagic unit to be fitted so the unit could be left connected on a permanent basis, but it still flattened my battery on TWO separate occasions, and I can now no longer trust it.

It works at the moment, but I fear I may have further problems and issues with it so no longer use it anymore and its the dual camera 750 variant, so I'm not happy with it, or them, and will not recommend them.

Good stuff - Mobius is a great camera but requires a bit of configuration - Did you use capacitors in them or are you on the original batteries?

Not sure why car makers (or indeed dealers) are not paying attention to the need / desire for dashcams. Afterall they bother with reversing cameras, so the tech is not an issue. Perhaps once insurers offer discounts for dashcam equipped cars they'll wake up.

I get the impression that the management with the power is old and staid .... a function of the time it takes to get to the top.

They need to not just keep up, but try to predict tech trends.

I still waiting to see a vehicle that can be updated via a home wifi .......

They're overpriced junk.

The 380 at least has a soldered on clock battery. Once that expired, the camera would no longer work and the battery is very difficult to replace.

Also, it took ages to start recording (as in up to a minute).

I exclusively fit Mobius cameras for myself and others as they're cheap, discreet have good image quality day and night and you can easily buy spare parts. Not that I've had one fail yet.

I am still on original batteries. There is so much you can do an all inexpensively with them it's great. The lens options are fantastic! I was considering purchasing 2 more so I don't have to swap them between the cars each time and use existing ones as rear cameras and get 2 new ones with the C lens (wide angle one), but I am just too tight tbh.

This is why after near 3 years and still running my original 2, despite there being many other cameras I have been tempted by..... I can't argue with the raw footage quality vs price punching well above its weight and the staggering reliability. Mine stay in car's 365days a year (366 this year) and with climate ranges from -15 ish to 45Deg C they have not missed a beat! All hail the tictac box inspired Mobius   I do wish they would come out with an all new model though, just to see what they come up with :( Current prices are around £48.91 last I saw the other day when providing a link to the original seller for the 200th time and even though they were £37 odd when I got mine, they are still well worth the money IMO! Current ones are the 3rd generation with some little improvements and a higher capacity battery (roughly 40% more juice).

Wow you are not having the best of luck at all! I used to run my DoD GS600 permanant live via 12v socket before I decided to go switched live on fuse box and on many occasions I forgot to unplug it leaving it running constantly. 3 or 4 days at a time and apart from looping over the same utterly boring video, the car never had an issue starting. Left at airport for 5 days I think was the record, did a little poo when I got back to car and found it still running, but all was fine

Had my 650GW (two channel, front/back) in the car for almost 2 years now. Connected up to a Powermagic and plumbed into the fusebox.

It's by no means perfect. But quality is good, I have front and back recording to one memory card, can access the files by wifi and on my phone so I don't need to keep pulling the card out. It's discreet and doesn't really draw any attention (small due to no screen). GPS built in etc.

It's had a few moments that are probably more due to the card needing a routine formatting (same card for almost 2 years btw) and it does get very hot for what it is, but nothing I fear about. It does seem to run the car battery harder than I'd like but the Powermagic box cuts it off when it's low so I've never had an issue with the car because of it.

It ticks far more boxes for my needs than almost anything I've seen on sale (though I can think of many improvements). I'd not say it's the best dashcam but I'd say it's far from junk.
