It's worth buying a Bongo Friendee, simply because of the name.

It's Sunday name is: Mazda Bongo Friendee Freetop 2, which is even better.

Ford Freda sounds nice.

a Ford Freda RS would be lovely.

All good options. Ta for the replies  :). I can tell we will be looking at plenty in person before we decide  :D.

Might be worth searching Quest on demand for the Wheeler Dealers program where they they converted a T2 to a camper.

BUT- anything based on a ford transit - check out the need for a fuel bowser or an oil well , as they are don't just consume fuel- they eat it. Shame, as a second hand Clarke conversion is a good cheap way to get the basis of a camper. Sliding side door with window on passenger side, window on driver side. Some have eight seats ,microwave, water heater and heated hand wash,,with a rear storage area, where the bulkhead could be removed for more space. Others have a disposable( cartridge system) loo in the rear. Power for the auxiliary electrics is via separate batteries ,charged when from the engine with a voltage monitor on the dash.

LOOKING AT http://www.van-conversion.co.uk/products/welfare-vehicle, I notice they do conversions on other makes . But the cheaper ones will come up on auction - Transits are favourite as Network Rail use these , and replace them regularly as they are ( AFAIK) done on a 3 year /mileage option basis.

Yes, we have a thread on those in this section.

Personally i like a Camper disguised as a workers van, windows blacked out.  I never get bothered.

Then you can just stay over night in Pub Car Parks, and other normal parking places, even on a sea front, where there might be signs saying no overnight stops. Lots of the most scenic areas now have no Camping Signs.

That was the stupidest thing I ever saw Wheeler Dealers do, uncut vans are really doing some money.

Assuming we're talking the post-2000 vans, I've always found transits to be better on fuel that most of the others. Merc's on the other hand are thirsty buggers. Company I used to work for put me in new Sprinters quite a bit and the fuel consumption was worse than my old smiley-face transit.

Mum and dad run a caravan site, so see a lot of campers, from DIY'd LDV 400's to brand new shiney things that cost the same as a small house. The one that no-one ever seems to have any problems with is the Mazda Bongo. Which when you think they're all pretty much 15+ years old, isn't bad going.
