Ideal number of handbrake clicks?

Featured Replies

Sorry guys, I know it talks of 1mm from the stops etc but in reality how many clicks is ideal?

I changed my handbrake cables (MOT fail!) and have adjusted the handbrake nut so it locks the rear wheels on 4 clicks (offside locks on 3, nearside on 4), is this about right? Or should it be 3 (which would mean offside would lock on 2 clicks- is that a bit too soon?)

I have searched for this but I couldn't find anything other than the 1mm measurement.

Cheers

I would say 3-5 clicks is totally fine. Only car i ever had fail was an Escort which was about 14 click from all the handbrake abuse it got in my youth.

Put mine through the MOT last week (Pass). I always aim for 3-4 clicks on the handbrake without any problems encountered.

The measurement you speak of, on mine the O/S is about 1mm, the N/S is slightly less.

A few years ago I did fit the Audi TT return springs (there are a few "how to" posts on here). As a result the calipers always return to "fully off".

This has resulted in even pad wear on both sides, no sticking and the handbrake cable yoke (under the ashtray) remaining at 90deg to the direction of pull.

I have the springs fitted as well so the adjustment yoke is almost even, just the slight difference between sides!

It depends on your MoT tester, but I'd say 4 to 6 clicks is "normal".

2 runs a risk of the pads running "on" with suspension movement I think.

I had to put a new caliper on mine last year and ended up at 3 clicks holding and 4 if I really wanna get it on tight, I found the best thing to do is adjust it so the wheels have slight braking with handle down then wind it out until ur happy with 4 clicks, I was aiming for 4 but mine likes 3, ignore the 1mm off stop thing as it sounds your calipers are slightly out of balance which shouldnt be to big a issue on mot as long as they both pull good and is within the imbalance limits, these calipers do seize alot!

4 to 6 is what the DSA say. I like mine at 4 and then you know you easily have an extra notch when you need it.
