  • Thank you for that Brian. I dropped in to the local Nationwide BS branch for a chat yesterday, as always the staff were very helpful. It seems a bit of a no-brainer to cover 3 vehicles and 2 cell phon

  • I've just received a letter informing me that my Skoda Assist runs out on 30th May. They offer to extend assistance for 1 year for £89 or 2 years for £145

  • There are loads of threads on breakdown cover. I would do a search. People have different views and experiences.   Remember Cashback sites, such as quidco, are your friend.

Some of the prices quoted on here are high.

I guess it depends on what you want from your breakdown cover but it is easy to get carried away.

  • Homestart. If my car breaks down on the drive then I'll get the garage to come and get it. Not needed.
  • Personal cover. Not needed.
  • European cover. Not needed, often cheaper to buy it for the periods required.

So all I need is roadside assist and onward journey (if the car can't be fixed by the roadside they'll get you and your car to where you need to be).

Using moneysupermarket the cheapest quote is £17.05 for the year (Kwikfit) who use the same contractors as the AA and the RAC etc.

That is interesting. I have a couple of months before I need to make a decision, but it looks like in my case (2 cars, one bike, only one driver) the Nationwide deal might be best at about £50/year (taking into account the interest paid against the charges). At the moment I probably pay about £25 extra each for the old Saab (on a classic car policy) and my Triumph in order to have some breakdown cover included with the insurance. I don't do many miles with either (3000 in the Saab, 1000 on my bike), and of course when I'm using one of them I'm not using the Skoda, so one cover for all three makes sense (assuming I've read the Nationwide BS terms correctly).

Best wishes,

Alan

I just checked www.moneysupermarket.com again, this time I put in two cars and one motorbike.

£58.97, same cover as above.

I'd forgotten about paying a bit of tax on the interest

Since April you don't pay tax on up to £1000 of interest of you are a lower tax rate payer and £500 of interest if you are a higher tax rate payer

I wish that was the case Bigjohn, it is the first £1000 of savings that is tax free (so about £20 worth of interest) not the first £1000 of interest (which would take at least £50,000 held on deposit) :-)

OK, I'll bow to greater knowledge but I'd read this elsewhere:-

I've been with the RAC for years, thankfully, never had to use them but they cover the driver not the car/bike so I can call them out even if I'm a passenger.

Fortunately Nationwide Flex plus kind of do both

1) A car for each account holder (1 each for our joint account) is covered for any driver

2) Each account holder is also covered for any other car not owned by them

Autoaid. Cheap (a quarter of the AA price - wigh 16 years loyalty!) and they refund your bills within 14 days everytime I've claimed.

No contest

Yes, Autoaid mentioned further up the thread

I've used Autoaid before and will again if I end up with three cars to cover when the Skoda cover expires on my Superb next year (will end up with three cars requiring cover 2 with Nationwide and 1 with Autoaid - £42.35).

The problem for us was Autoaid didn't cover driving in Europe and didn't cover my son in one of our cars ( It just covers policy holder and spouse)

It certainly looks like you are correct Bigjohn, and I'm completely wrong. That is good news, I should be able to get some considerable tax back.

Best wishes,

Alan

Hi again Bigjohn,

I'm looking at the Nationwide Flexplus option (I'm already a Nationwide member). It would seem that there is no limit of vehicles covered by the policy, and there is no need to declare the vehicles (just be the owner or the driver if it belongs to someone else). Do you think I have misread the conditions?

What I need is cover for my Superb estate (main car - 10,000 miles a year), Saab 900 convertible (summer car, 3000 miles year) and Triumph 900 Scrambler (look like Steve McQueen bike, 1000 miles year). If the Nationwide policy will cover all three (I'm the only driver/rider) then it would make most sense when the Skoda Assist runs out in October.

What do you think?

From the Nationwide site:-

Section A – Introduction to Britannia Rescue Breakdown Policies

• This policy is for Nationwide FlexPlus current account holder(s) residing in the UK

• This policy will cover the Nationwide FlexPlus current account holder(s) for breakdown and recovery assistance at the roadside and at your home address. FlexPlus current account holders are covered in any vehicle whether as a driver or a passenger

• It also provides cover for a vehicle registered to the Nationwide FlexPlus current account holder and being used with their permission. Where the account is in joint names 2 vehicles can be covered

• Cover is available within the UK and if you travel to the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man and those countries specified in Section D (UK & European Assist) found within this policy

• We will protect you against the cost of vehicle breakdown and recovery assistance within the policy period for which you pay a monthly fee to Nationwide

• Cover will begin when you open a Nationwide FlexPlus current account

If you are the driver then it does say "FlexPlus current account holders are covered in ANY vehicle whether as a driver or a passenger"

Presume the "Where the account is in joint names 2 vehicles can be covered" is for where other people drive the cars

Thanks Bigjohn,

The Flex plus deal would certainly seem that this would suit me perfectly. I'm the only driver of all 3 vehicles (my son is only 11, the pain of paying for his insurance will begin in 6 years). It would be convenient if the Superb estate was covered on the off chance that I loan it to someone else I suppose, but the Saab and Triumph would be covered by virtue of me being the driver/rider. This seems a really good deal at an effective cost of only £50/year (plus it includes some cell phone cover for my son and myself - another bonus).

Many thanks Bigjohn, that has been really helpful.

Best wishes,

Alan

I get the impression Alan that you have your heart set on this Nationwide Flex Plus option and are looking for reassurance it is the right choice for you.

Just be aware that there are cheaper options out there.

I went with Nationwide Flex Plus primarily because of the mobile phone insurance, with breakdown cover a bonus - travel insurance and free cash withdrawals abroad are nice little perks as well.

Edit: Just noticed I posted in this Fred back in April and I'm now repeating myself  .

Not really Silver, I have a month or so to make up my mind, but I'm not sure I'm going to find anything appreciably cheaper than about £50 for two cars and a bike. The cell phone insurance is a bit of a bonus (although my son and I have never bothered about it previously). Travel insurance is neutral as I already get it with my ordinary Nationwide Flex account.

Nationwide does have the advantage of being a really easy solution in that I'm already a customer, and it is just a few clicks to change a Flex into a Flex Plus account. I suppose what I would really like is the Skoda Assist for no more than the cost of the Nationwide solution, but it will not be. I think the cost would be about £85/year, plus perhaps £25 each for the Saab and my bike, so something like £135 for that solution, or an additional £80 (plus something for the cell phone cover I suppose). Being a tightwad £80 is worth it, so it seems the best solution I've heard of so far.

Very best wishes,

Alan

We have never bothered with cell phone insurance Brian, what might it (typically) be worth per year? We have two cell phones, mine is an iPhone that cost £500 (although it would probably cost much less to replace it with the same model now), my son's is a Samsung (probably cost about £100, but again probably cheaper now).

Best wishes,

Alan

EE wanted £10 a month to cover my phone (but that was a while back) - I had it insured under my household insurance but that covered the phone only i.e. no cover for misuse or breakdown.

  • Author

Many thanks Brian. In that case the Nationwide BS deal seems to be very good. I'm pretty sure the household insurance would cover the cell phones for theft, fire &c, but probably only at the house, and not for accidental damage.

Overall the cover that comes with the Flex Plus account seems to make it the best option (for me). I don't think I need to do anything until Skoda Assist get in touch to make an offer to extend the cover (I'm guessing this will be some time in August as the car will be 3 years old in mid-September).

Best wishes to all those who have contributed, this has been a really useful thread.

Alan

I had a 'personal possessions' section that covered personal items (with some exclusions, such as cycles) anywhere in the world - TBH I think it would be a PiTA claiming for a mobile phone under home insurance - much quicker with bespoke mobile insurance where the phone is registered (er, hopefully...).

Thank you for that Brian. I dropped in to the local Nationwide BS branch for a chat yesterday, as always the staff were very helpful. It seems a bit of a no-brainer to cover 3 vehicles and 2 cell phones for £50/year, but no point changing until a month before the Skoda Assist runs out (mid-August). I can do everything online, which is another bonus.

For Silver: I might save a few pounds on a different scheme for the breakdown cover, but overall the Nationwide BS deal seems to suit me well with the other benefits. I did get some good advice from you and others, so I'm really glad I asked the question.

Yet again the Briskoda.net site has been really useful. Many thanks to all those that contributed.
