Office Professional 2016 - Ebay

Featured Replies

I've been using an Enterprise edition of Office 2007 and I'm thinking it maybe time to update it as it's looking a bit long in the tooth, so had a look at Ebay for MS Office Professional 2016, as it contains MS Publisher.

You can find quite a few of them at around £20-30 for a product licence key & download.

I was wondering has anyone bought one of these and what's the catch?

Ta.

Pretty sure the new versions of Office are all Cloud- and subscription- based, so I'm sticking with the older versions personally. I'm guessing what you get for that money is either dodgy, a short subscription, or a student license.

I can't say I fancy burning my data allowance up when I need to fill a spreadsheet in on site. I still run 2003 and it's still working utterly fine, fully up to date and able to work with files from the newest version. The only bit I would like updated is Autoroute, but they've axed it and just tell you to use Bing Maps, which can't do half the stuff I use Autoroute for.

Most likely you'll just get a product code and link to download the software only to find out the code supplied has already been registered.

Are you suggesting my copy of Office 97 might be out of date??

In all seriousness; M$ switched to yearly subscriptions and "Software as a service" on Office a few years back; their current versions put everything in the (unreliable*) M$ cloud, and you have to constantly pay to maintain access to it.

* Crashed out several times over the past 12 months, stopping much of the world from accessing their documents for many hours, and in one case - days.

Have you tried Libre Office??

(Its my mum who still runs Office 97).

Except for the MANY versions that are not subscription based! You can still get Office 2016 in a traditional manor, i.e. one off fee for a bit of paper with a code on it (source: purchased and installed plenty...)

Also you can pay for the relevant subscription and download the desktop version of office and save your work where ever you wish, no one is forcing you to save data on Microsoft's cloud, local drives, flash, Google Drive, XYZ cloud service etc are all possibilities. Go for the annual subscription and once a year you'll need to reactivate it, but other than that it doesn't need* to talk to Microsoft.

Back to the OP. For £30 its not going to be legit. If its not a straight up copy it will be some sort of bulk OEM purchase that is tied to a PC but not require as they have a corp 365 subscription or similar, so 'legit' if you ignore the T&Cs. Sadly your requirement for Publisher mean you'll be looking at Home & Business so around £150 for a licence as you'll not get Publisher with Home & Student.

* But will. What I mean is that if it can't it won't stop working until your annual subscription is up.

Yep, I find it very clumsy, especially when I want to do word art and such like.

In fact I'd describe it as horrible. I guess I'll have to stick with MSO 2007 then.

Thanks.

Are you sure about that? You can buy standalone versions or subscriptions which allow you to download the software to your computer. The documents you create can be stored locally or in the cloud.

I use Office 365 as it's the cheapest way of getting MS Office 365 on all my PC's and Macs (you can have 5 in total) and also have 1TB of online storage.

I just found this on one of the listings,

All product keys have been extracted from installations on PCs. All keys are checked thoroughly before dispatch.

The key is therefore ready to activate your Office Professional Plus 2016 installation forever.

I just found this on one of the listings,

Legit key, just not yours :P

Stick with 2k7, nothing really stopping you using it still as it can open the latest file formats without issue (2k3 had the compatibility pack but that did still have some issues with certain files) so you're not really going to gain from an upgrade at £150ish for a legit version.

Makes it sound like they've been obtained by way of a virus, etc. Not something I'd want to be paying to support.

Giant - If 97 works for her, then it's doing it's job - why pay more? The only real worry if she opens a dodgy email attachment with a trojan in, but if you turn macros off, then there's not a vast chance of a problem.

My apologies, at work we stopped paying through the nose after Office 2008 came out, as we didnt like the way the interface was going, as the latter versions produced more stupid saved file variations I slowly forced Libre Office on as the default option, only falling back to O2008 for one stupid government department that sends us stuff we HAVE to read - in an obscure macro laden attachment that wont work properly with anything BUT Office.

Which version? I find the latest version to be far better than the old versions, yeah I had problems with art and photos in versions prior to last years update; and I still get a bit hacked off that they cant manage an update properly -  remove the old installation and then install the new version - what a faff.

Just downloaded & installed the latest one..

I'm going to try and do a leaflet with some word art, but I don't think I'll get that far.

Nope I can't do what I need to with Libre Office, compared to Publisher.

We use 365 at work. It's not crashed once over the last 2 years.

You can also buy office as a non cloud package.

Sign yourself up to the developer network and get pro copies of all the software for multiple machines...

If it looks too good to be true it probably is.

But...

Lots of people sell the license keys for O365 that come with their Windows tablets etc. It's a bit risky but possibly worth a punt.

remember you can buy it for about £40 (1 year sub) from real shops. You'd have to consider if the risk was worth saving £20.

Or alternatively buy a cheap windows tablet that comes with the license, pull the key from it and then flog the tablet.

I don't think that SWT participates in such a programme.

If you have a company email address just type it in. You could be eligible.

Or if you have someone in education you can get office at stupidly low prices.

Don't have a company email address, that's for managers.

Teachers also qualify.
