Fabia Trip computer accuracy ?

Featured Replies

Is the Fabia vRS trip computer known to be wildly optimistic in its MPG figures.

I've just got an average of 36.5mpg of the last 1770 miles using the brim-to-brim refuelling method, whereas the computer gives an average of 43mpg since new (thats 3400miles). As fuel economy should have improved over more recent miles as the engine loosens up, the trip computer seems way out.

Any comments?

I'll do a search in a mo and see if this is a historic problem (not seen a thread on this since getting my Skoda).

Well I have been checking my mpg since I bought my 2005 fabia vRS in May

using the full to the brim including the expansion tank method.....

33.36 June

30.47 July

37.84 August

38.82 September

39.92 September a round trip to Leicester 342 miles

36.48 October

36.89 November

and there is the result ..... as you can see not very good .... but

my weekday mileage is most days 2 miles to work and 2 miles back

home in traffic .......... with weekends 20 - 40 miles country road driving

also consider how inaccurate the speedo is ...... mine at 70mph on the meter

is really 65mph on gps ..... which would make the true mpg even worse:thumbdwn:

maybe I should take up the option of using my van for commuting to / from work

and drive the fabia at weekends ..... but that would take away the joy of going to work :D

How do you get your average mileage since new readout? mine only does per trip and it resets after an hour of being staionary and only shows mpg for tha last journey made

I regularly get around 50-55mpg on the trip computer, but it usually works out to be nearer 45-50mpg... so I do find it a little inaccurate!

P.s. What the hell do you do to your cars to be getting less than 40mpg? If you look at my signature, I don't exactly hang about myself and 45+mpg is easily attainable!

Change to programme 2, press the button on the underside of the stalk, this toggles programmes, I reset this every time I fill up, and you do that my pressing and holding it in for 2-3 seconds... didn't you know that!

If you find you are in traffic alot, or at idle, the reading drops while you watch. So, unless you atre on the move all the time, my guess is the reading isnt terribly accurate

You arent driving hard enough :D

May 2003 - 3 points £60 fine, July 2005 - 5 points, £175 fine + £35 court costs... I think the local constabulary would disagree...

obviously not, thats why I asked.

Well just been and had a look and I have never reset it, but the miles says 2600 so it must have reset at some point. I have average 45.1 mpg. 66 hours driving average speed 39mph

Hmmm It seems that the trip computer is not very accurate from what I've read.

Thats OK cos even if I'm really only doing 36mpg thats a fuel saving of £800 per year for me, compared with the TD5 discovery that I had for years. So I'm happy. (Still got me old V8 90 for muddy days. That does about 12mpg !!)

It resets after 99 hours of driving or xxxx miles (forget how many!) but it should all be in the handbook ;)

Cool cheers chris.

12 MPG... I bet you can see the fuel guage going down on that if you look carefully!

Assuming the fuel gauge is working ;)

Nice mate

Love the V8 90, no creature comforts, but the best 4x4 by far, and the burble of a V8 too.

It can only record 100 hours/10,000 kilometres, then it resets automatically. But as I previously said, I reset this each time I refill, it's a pretty good indication how careful you've been on the tankful, well when you take off 5mpg or so! ;)

Mate' date=' that proves you need a road angel or something. On the way to trax earlier in the year, I was late, very late. My journey from Blackpool to Silverstone was quite swift, and I averaged 24 mpg. Like I said, you arent driving it hard enough.

(18 mpg on the Nurburgring, and I was only driving at 5/10ths)[/quote']

I was talking about road mpg, not the ring or circuit based stuff, as the original posters were (I think). :)

I've never been caught by a fixed speed camera, the first time I was caught was a guy in the hedge and then the second time it was a traffic car hiding down a slip road, he tracked me for a few seconds before I spotted him and slowed down... I had a road angel and sold it, I don't think it would of helped me in either situation, due to the fact they were both handhelds and you have pretty much no time to react to them!:thumbdwn:, unless you have a garage door opener that is... ;)

I cover high mileages, but always use the same roads and I know about all the hazards, fixed speed cameras etc. The only thing is for me to do is slow down!

24mpg! On a 470 mile trip on the continent , I was holding it at a steady 90mph and averaged 54mpg! To get mine to go as low as 24mpg, I'd have to average somewhere in the region of 130mph... so I think someone was being a naughty boy!;)

After putting in several thousand 'virtual' laps around the ring, I'm planning a visit to the real thing in the spring!

I get 37 MPG :)

So was I, my track mpg was in brackets for that reason. My combined average is around 30-35 mpg, consistently. If i use the trip mpg, sometimes i get as high as 50, but only if there are roadworks or traffic flow is slow.

I'm sure it would be different if I was a high mileage driver still.

its not all about top speed either. its about how quickly you get to that speed, and how heavy you are on the pedal. You could probably stick to 60mph and still hit under 30mpg depending on what gear you were in.

If I sit at a steady speed I am going to get better mpg then someone who has to do stop start driving.

I don't think the computer works under 5mph or in reverse. I've crawled in traffic and it hasn't started to register. Not looked in reverese. :)

Other thing. How do you know that the pump is always reading accurately?

When I first got my vRS, never found the mpg readout to be any more than 2mpg out on my calculated mpg.

Wouldn't hurt to check again I suppose... Will fill up tomorrow and let you know in a week or two.
