£35k is too much for an Octavia. Its a good car at £19k for a new discounted VRS but not £35k.

£35k gives you a lot of other choices in cars.

Just my opinion, so don't take it the wrong way.

Its your money, and I'm sure you'll enjoy the car.

What other car will you get with the same space and toys for 35k new?

I think the panoramic roof really transforms the interior, especially on an estate, and I have it open wherever possible.
It doesn't make the car too hot as you can close the blind if you want and when you open the roof it it cools far faster. I've had no problems with mine, and I've seen very few complaints here from other owners.

Canton makes a big difference to the sound quality over the standard stereo, so is well worth it if you like your music. If you mostly listen to radio 4 then save your money.

I think the winter pack is also worth the cash. The heated screen is great on an icy morning, and the seats are *so* good, especially with an open sunroof.

My only word of caution would be that if you are buying on PCP and plan to change the car after three years you'll get no change in GFV so you pay the full cost of options over three years. If you plan to run the car for a lot longer then you are getting more use out of them for the same cost.

For £35k there is a lot of choice, BMW, Merc, Audi, Lexus, Jaguar etc etc

How about a 340i for £33k with 100 PS more power (331ps)

And then you begin to spec it. Even the front armrest costs £43....

I get your point, but the at that price the beemer is more or less stripped for equipment. And whats the point of a premium car, without any of the premium gadgets?

But the Octavia would have a hefty discount down from £35k - maybe £5k - and has a lot more kit included.

It's a choice - do you go for power and badge, or lots of toys on a slightly slower car.

I configured many cars before deciding on the Octavia. Things like Mondeo, Insignia, Passat, and with similar spec they were approaching 40k! Audi/BMW/Merc, whilst very nice, were even more plus with the miles I do, the premium labour rates charged by the dealers made it a no no for me. When you buy a car with the intention of keeping it for four years 120k miles, many factors have to be taken into account. I'd have loved an A6 Avant Black Edition but with the extras I'd have wanted it was listing at 49k!!!

List on my Octy with the extras was just over 35k but I bought it via 'New-Car-Deal' and paid £28,450 - a saving of over 19% and its delivered to my door on a transporter. I'm happy with that!

£35k on a budget brand car lol. That's made me really chuckle.

But as you say whatever floats your boat. Still hilarious though :-))

I paid 28k! So is 38k for a Mondeo or Insignia acceptable?

If your doing 30k a year, the Octavia might not be a great choice, as other posts details, its not that quiet, especially on rough surfaces. Get your ear plugs ready.

What's it going to be worth at 4 years and 120k miles, I'm no expert, but maybe £5k? So effectively your writing off £23k over 4 years so £5750 a year depreciation.

Can you not get a company car, so they pay for that, rather than your hard earned wonga?

If I was doing 30k a year I'd be looking for something more refined and quieter, and diesel and cheap enough to be able to almost throw it away at the end, ex demo mid spec Passat or Mondeo maybe.

Dont take it the wrong way, just trying to save you some money.

I get paid £500 per month car allowance plus theres the 45p per mile for the 1st 10k then 25p after, which averages out about £750 per month with the actual fuel being about £260. So, after tax and other expenses (running costs/insurance, etc), I'm saving at least £750 every month (after 2 years running my ageing Altea I've saved £14k - so paid half the new car up front). I agree with what you're saying, as we all know, high mileage kills car residuals. I expect the Octavia will be worth about 5k, but during the 4 years, after expenses, I should have saved a minimum or 14k again. Done the company car thing for 14 years, done the HMRC anal raping for 14 years and had 'adequate' cars over the 14 year period. Now I can have what I want - which is the only real benefit of opting out. I mentally conditioned myself into understanding the 14k in my ISA was purely for the car and it wasnt 'my' money.

The best deal for me was a Mazda 6 Sport Nav auto estate with radar cruise & tech pack for 28k. With the Mazda contribution and 0%, on a PCH it was £2500 down & £250 per month for three years then hand it back. So, I'd still have had £11,500 in my ISA and after the savings over the three years, would probably have doubled that figure. But, even though its a nice car, I wanted an Octavia VRS! 3 year Sainsburys bank loan for £12500 @ 3.3 % is £350 per month which my allowance easily covers.

So, now perhaps you understand that I'm not actually using any of my 'hard earned wonga' to buy this car - its all funded by my car allowance plus I still save extra on top which goes towards my next car deposit! However when the Octy comes to be changed I will be in my early 50's so will want a nice comfortable quiet car and will be looking at something different and probably pre-reg'd. This will be MY 1st new car hence why the excessive amount of extras!

I ordered a vRS 230 for £29,410 before discounts.

I looked at six different marques before settling on Skoda.

Jaguar

Vauxhall

Ford

VW

BMW

Audi

None of them offered the same price/performance/options as the 230 does.

Similarly! Ford, Mazda, VW, Audi, Jag. Same reasons for going for the Skoda!

I love my KESSY. It's the first box I ticked on the spec list after having a similar system in my previous Renault :)

I understand the risk but I'd prefer to have the convenience every day rather than live in fear of it being nicked. In fact, I'd rather someone take my car without disturbing me than risk someone attacking my family.

After 2 BMW's and a Land Rover I've given up on being worried about a key less car theft.  As said, it stops my house getting burgled for the car and as my car isnt generally parked outside my house at any given time due to workign shifts and the on street parking its not as much as a concern for me.  Plus if these forums are to be belived I need to worry more about the car being panel beaten by random cars whenever I pop to sainsburys!!
